It depends on a lot of things, as most of peoples' replies have already stated. For the most part, my alters answer to the body's name, Cassandra (which is my name). Alters like Kat and Rain understand that the freedom to use and go by their names isn't always there, such as when we're with family or friends who don't know about us.
Some alters, like Rebel and Kyra, either aren't used the idea that they're alters or don't know that they're DID yet, so they don't answer to my name and will respond with either confusion or anger, or both.
But if we're around people who know about us, or are in a friendly/safe environment whoever's out will simply correct the person and introduce themselves by their name.

 I just smile and say "Guess again". -Kat

We prefer to use our body's name as well its much less confusing then trying to explain to everyone when we switch we are different people. Besides we are so use to being called Malcolm we neglect to correct them.

(Hi Watcher. Welcome to the DID Forum!)

Hardly anyone I have disclosed to has asked about our names, and I usually don't share their names. While on the one hand I talk freely here and in person about many aspects of my DID, we're actually very secretive and get spooked if anyone seems to notice an insider. When a friend on the phone asked if she could talk to anyone inside, I hung up on her! One time I recall I yelled at my therapist that I was not Una then I rushed out of the room and when I came back I couldn't say if not Una then who? Urg, I'm not sure if that parses. The pronoun I is being abused in this paragraph.
Dx DID older woman married w kids. 0 Una, host + 3, 1, 5. 1 animal. 2 older man. 3 teen girl. 4 girl behind amnesia wall. 5 girl in love. Our thread.
