Little's obsessive attachment to inanimate objects?

Postby doe-eyed » Fri Jun 01, 2012 6:17 pm

In the wake of moving away from our SO, who had a very close bond with our young one, and really allowed her to come out of her shell, she (Izumi) has become obsessed with 5 hairclips. When we don't know where they are, she immediately stops us from whatever we are doing to look for them, agitated the entire time. I'm not sure what to do about this? We talk with our SO from time to time, but both of us are kind of busy, and >< there are other issues between other alters. Anyhow, should I let this behavior continue? Has anyone else had something like this happen? Thanks for sharing.

Like all kids, perhaps this is a "phase" as you all go through change (moving away from your SO). Change always throws up uncertainty for kids I reckon and I guess one reaction to that is to latch onto things that they know. Like the hair clips. Just one theory. I, in my opinion, wouldn't be too concerned about it. Alice, one of my alters, went through a phase of being attached to a small dog toy and would panic if she couldn't see it (and we couldn't find it). Now, none of us has seen it in months and I think it has been replaced by another toy anyway! This is just my opinion anyway..

These clips are transitional security objects. Little children often need such objects, and many books about taking care of little children discuss how to accommodate their security objects. You can help her out by keeping the clips safe, and keeping track of them. Maybe in a little bag or box? Maybe help her choose a special place to keep them in the house and in the car, and practice always putting them in the special place when she is done playing with them.

Thank you for your kind words and advice! Right now I've got them on my desk, where she can see them. We're going to see if we can find a cute little box for them.

Una explained it better than I could. I'll just add that baby Adam reacts the same way with the four stuffed animals on the bed. We have to be careful they don't get shoved off or out of sight because when he goes to sleep, if one isn't right there, a dreadful panic ensues. I guess I considered that normal.
