I am a nonDID as well. My son (15 yrs old) was recently diagnosed. I believe it was that he was getting therapy that triggered a memory and kind of rewoke one of his alters to deal with the stress of that traumatic memory. It seems that there are some that simply do not have a safe place to deal with things until they are older/on their own....but not sure. This was just our experience....

It does seem that the host often becomes aware during a time in life when the host is relatively more able to cope. Also there are some precipitating factors. These include death of a childhood abuser. Renewed contact with a childhood abuser. Contact with someone who is a trigger (perhaps because in some way similar to a childhood abuser). And finally a very big factor: our own children reaching the same age as we were when we were abused. All these factors are mentioned in several of Richard Kluft's publications on the natural history of DID.
I was aware at multiple times in my teens, 20's, and 30's that I was experiencing either lost time or possession. But I ignored. I didn't know what else to do.
