Seeing Alters In Your Dreams?

Postby w4rp3dh4l0 » Thu May 10, 2012 10:44 pm

I see my alters in my dreams.

We talk about therapy, what problems we're having, who wants to do what, things we need to talk to someone about, help we need, whatever.

I was just wondering if I'm the only one.

I don't sleep right. I've very "aware" when I'm sleeping (as a result of abuse) and I was just wondering if maybe that's it?

Just curious.

I don't usually see mine in my dreams, but I actually had a dream with all of them in it not too long ago, so I thought I might as well reply.

We were all in it, even the ones who don't show themselves much, and there was one more young girl who I don't recognize, so I'm not sure if she is someone I haven't found yet or just a dream character. We were all in a house together, exploring and playing games and just having fun. We helped decorate each other's rooms and went down to look through a dark basement for something, but I don't remember what.

The thing that struck me as both most unusual and lovely was that everyone in the dream was happy. No one was sad, or scared, or angry. Everyone got along. It was like... if nothing bad had ever happened, and if we could have all had each other as head mates without all the bad stuff. You know?

It was very nice to experience, though. If only for a night.
I might know what you are going through.

I don't usually see them, but I will dream "as" them and have for years without realizing it. In some of those dreams, they will see or meet others. I had one dream where LY discovered a little boy hiding in a wardrobe who ended up being someone new at the time. I had nother dream as that little boy at a different time. I had a dream where I was me and went back to the past in a time machine and tried to "save the baby" and I shifted between me and LY in that dream. I had a dream where I was me and I was phasing back and forth between myself and Poet. In the dream, T was on the phone with us and then he was there and she told him her name. It was a name that had come up a few times (this was early on in diagnosis and I was still not believing it). In the dreams, there is a lot less dissociation. I am aware of being them, but I don't forget what it felt like, what I experienced, immediately afterward. Also, it doesn't feel unnatural, as if I am pushed back and observing. It feels very integrated, by comparison, with the exception of Poet. I guess her self-destructive attitudes mean we keep barriers there at all time?

Now that I know I have DID, I realize that the many dreams I had throughout life were representative of our multiplicity -- doppelgangers of me, lost twins, carbon copies, me as an imposter, separated at birth, mistaken identity. I've long been drawn to stories the same themes in literature or film: body-snatchers, someone having to pretend they're someone else, good twin/evil twin, and of course multiple personality.

My first solid awareness of another alter, Little John, whom I replaced as host, came to me in a series of dreams as a part of therapy years ago. I don't recall specifically (there's still a lot of memory blockage) but I'm almost positive I had dreams before that of meeting and hanging out with specific alters. If we did that then, we don't need to dream about each other anymore because we switch frequently and by choice and can observe and talk with each other much more directly.
Dx = DID. My blog. My personal Periodic Table of 78 alters.

I had a dream
Just the other day of Bobby telling me something in pictures (as he is non-verbal) and the first time I ever saw K (who also never uses the voice box) was in a dream years and years ago. Dreams I think are such a powerful tool. I think it's good you can all come together that way and talk about things!

It sounds like your system has found dreams as a good way to 'conference'. If you don't feel that is working, can you work on asking them to meet you before you doze off? I ask in case you are waking up not feeling as if you had good sleep....

My son's alters came to him as nightmares...they say they were trying to 'teach him' something, to get his attention. They still do a lot at bedtime or while he sleeps. We've talked about how that just happens to be the 'best time' for them. They are in private, there are no distractions, and - for his system - the two Little Ones have gone to sleep so they don't have to worry about their hearing 'grown up' talk...

He was waking up just tired though after a few long talks...and so he's working at having those conscious (go inside to catch up with everyone) 'conferences' at least twice a day. In the morning and in the evening and, if needed, mid-day...it's just a "hey, how is everyone? Did anything come up you wanted to talk about?)

Also, in the medium between nightmares and this co-consciousness - they also had a point of external (hallucinations) where the one who wanted to talk to my son or relay something to me or the T - my son would see in the room and listen and speak to him that way. I think it helped him to 'see' him outside for a conversation and also helped me and T to tell who was talking/when...

Just our experience. :)

Yes, it really helps. Although at times I miss those 'old fashioned' dreams and not very restful.

I like that idea.

I've had that too. My DH knows when I yell "g*d d@m!t" at night, that I'm hallucinating. (I sleep with one ear to the ground, so can I jump awake when needed, and rush to action; DH would get confused whether I'm jumping from internal vs. external stimuli) Nothing like opening my eyes and "seeing" a little floating above my bed, I momentarily cuss(shock), but then I wake up, realize what's going on and go inside to talk.

This was very helpful to my partner and I. His T told him that meeting in your dreams was impossible and didn't make sense. But it was a fact that it happened. It was really nice to see that this was happening with other people. I told his T about this. Told him to get his nose outta the DSM and start listening to patients and not writing them off! lol
