Is it normal to have conversations with your alters?

Postby withoutyoutheresnome » Mon May 07, 2012 3:36 am

Is it normal to have conversations with your alters? And see them, too?
Even in public places, and everyone else just thinks you're talking to yourself.
This happened to my love. The person that she was talking to and seeing seemed to fit the description of one of her alters perfectly.
Is this common? Similar experiences?

It's extremely common to have conversation with your alters. If you have DID, of course. I have them almost every day, at least short ones. They tend to be one sided. Somebody's in the body and they talk, while short comments come back from various people inside. We've had conversations among three or more as well, particularly in journaling, though they're harder to navigate.

I knew that my alters were "safe" when the first to really return, Jack, was jabbering and berating me while he was walking in public. Yet he quieted down whenever anyone else was near enough to hear or see him talking. He didn't want to get me/us in trouble or carted off to the looney bin, as he described it. We all do this, talk to those inside, then pretend we're just making noises if anyone happens upon us. I think we should just add something like "text me about it" if we get caught in the future. Who knows whether you have an earpiece in and you're just talking on the phone?

Most people don't see their alters but some people can, sort of as projections in front of them. Some people see translucent people or something less than substantial. Others describe their alters as appearing to be as real as anything in the world.
Dx = DID. My blog. My personal Periodic Table of 78 alters.

For us, the talking goes on all the time. We live in the world together, see and hear most of what is going on. Sure there are times that time slips away but we all talk to each other. The only time there is a problem is when one or more are upset, stressed. Then the fog rolls in and the rapid switching starts, then time becomes an issue and the headaches start. We live together so it’s hard not to have interaction. Maybe we are different than some with DID but this is the way it works for us.

On a normal day, we have at least 1 internal conversation about whatever is happening. It does tend to be quick, and then its just over. Usually 15 seconds or less, with some hand motions or twitches.

Unless were talking out loud, which we tend to only do when we know were alone. These conversations tend to last a long time, like a running commentary on some TV show going on, or some event that happened to us earlier that day, or maybe I just want to know whats going on with one of them.

The guys tend to be quiet unless I ask them something. Its actually how I know they're real, because what C. or Zack or even TK says is sometimes so outside the box (or just something I would have never thought of unless I had asked a friend for advice), that I have to believe its another human being talking to me.

i think its healthy to converse with my alters, it keeps us informed on whats going on with each other and allows us to be more comfortable leading to more co-consciousness. My basement is a place i feel comfortable doing this, a place i can be alone and i tend to pace around and it helps me figure things out. Plus doing it this way helps me get everyone settled and saying what needs to be said before leaving the house, so i dont go out looking like a crazy person :P but if we go out and things need to be said its done more on a mental note.
