in vs out patient treatment

Postby Sotrsab » Fri May 04, 2012 12:46 pm

Just wondering...Does anyone have any experience with in-patient treatment for DID & how it relates to Out-patient treatment?

My resistance is high & my successes low (or so it seems). I have a singleton friend (She's 65?) who sufferred severe abuses in childhood from maternal abandonment to sibling seperation to sexual abuses in foster homes. Her therapy program was M-F, 8-5. Worked well for her. I had been going to T M/W/F, for dble sessions until the money ran out, & had to cut back somewhat. I will be able to resume this schedule mid-June when Medicare kicks in. My dilemma is that I am 50 now & still in the beginning stages of healing. I know that healing from DID/C-PTSD takes 10 yrs (give or take) with out patient therapy sessions. I am considering entering an in-patient treatment facility to speed up my healing but my dissonance is this:

1) I don't want to 'fire' my current T - he is very special to me
2) I was hospitalized 2 yrs ago in a local psych ward & was not helped, but hurt throughout the
admittance (it was not a specialized treatment facility).
3) How do they balance remembering too much, too fast in reputable treatment facilities? - If you
know.

It sounds like an option you are looking at and it makes sense to get as much information as possible...we live in a state where anything 'in-patient' is still limited to basically a week or so just to help someone get through a crisis...so I'm not sure what facilities you may have open to you...

Since you like your T - would it be ok to bring up to them and ask their opinion? Perhaps they know about some options or some of the procedures/practices that you were asking about.

If you don't feel comfortable talking to your T about it right now and just want to gather info, you might try a crisis hotline just to ask 'where would you recommend someone to go if they needed help' and then call that facility and ask if they are short or long term, or if they know who might help...

I suppose a good positive to it might be the 'structure' and possibly medication for anxiety or any coexisting diagnosis...and if they specialize in DID, they would have a method or something to work with. The 'negative' might be that they may have daily staff changes (new people to get used to) or may not specialize in what you need...or maybe the structure would feel 'too' rigid? I hope your T can help you ask and answer some questions that would help you know what direction is best for you! Take care!
