DiD linked to psychopathy?

Postby SeenIt91 » Wed Feb 01, 2012 8:19 am

So i've been thinking about how DiD could be linked to psychopathy.

I've long thought i was dissiociating but suddenly realize i've fit every steps of being a psychopath, many events confirmed it.

I thought i had several personalities until i realized each one of them were made to suit my needs which was controlling every type of different personalities around me, simply to make them have interest in me so i could achieve my goal.

Does anyone having did feels like this?

For me, it seems to be about protection of the body and the core. I don't relate to any of what you said.

Um, yeah...no.
The various parts, in first creation were made to deal with survival/protection of the host body & mind, the internal system, and protect my sisters as well.

I think if it wasn't for the insiders, I would be a drooling, catatonic fool. Srsly, just wheel me up to the window, kinda thing.

Due to them, things are starting to slip in, bit by bit, in small enough pieces I can slowly process.

Over time, things got more complicated, resorted, but now encompass a more healing/final processing of old events. Plus it really helps at times to have an 'extra' set of eyes, or someone who can come from a different perspective to throw an opinion on something. Like I'll be working in the garden, and filling up a trough, I can get lost/zone out in the garden, while someone is keeping an eye on the trough to let me know when it's full. It doesn't work all the time, but like the saying there's strength in numbers. *I hope that makes sense.*

OP, are you saying that you realized you have fabricated your personalities in order to manipulate other people?
I'm not sure if that's psychopathy, but it doesn't sound like DID even though you sort of feel that you have different personalities.

Do you switch from one personality to another at will, or does it just happen without your own intention?
Do you ever miss time or blank out when you've been switching?
This sort of questions could be helpful for you in figuring out whether it could be DID.

Dissociative Identity Disorder is not linked to Anti-Social Personality Disorder. They're two completely different things!

When you have DID, you're not putting on a mask to manipulate another. Your "self" is so fragmented that different parts of your brain are acting based on their own desires without your input. The purpose is survival, not to control others!

I don't know about DID being linked specifically to psychopathy. Psychopathy is said to be born and sociopathy is said to be made. I am inclined to think that one can develop sociopathic personalities though if you have suffered a trauma that didn't involve your key needs being met. For instance, I have a couple of sociopathic personalities that only ever got let out when I was in my home situation because I had to work out how to lessen some of the abuse on me and that involved me having to manipulate people to get key needs like food and water met. Also those personalities had to be devoid of emotion and empathy in my family situation otherwise they would have been too vulnerable to being manipulated back by my abusers and maybe I would have starved if that had happened.

I actually think there is probably a lot of people here who would have the occasional personality demonstrating sociopathic tendencies due to their abuse. Those personalities hide away more vulnerable personalities that have been badly hurt by abuse and seek out ways to help one survive in abusive situations. I really think the connection between DID and sociopathy is a probably lot closer than a lot of people here might care to admit. But I don't see that as a bad thing if it helped people to survive. They can be healed, after all...
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.

I can personally relate to a did-psychopathy relationship, because I have two personalities, one being psychopathic, the other one being more average and socialy acceptable.

To me, (and this is only my personal opinion here), linking psychopathy and DID is almost like a misdiagnosis. Whilst many people with DID will often have alters that have similar physcothathic symptoms or tendencies, the reason for theses alters developing this way is fundamentally different to how a true psychopath personality is developed.

DID alters that have psychopathic traits tend to be formed as a defence mechanisim against horrific abuse, and are developed to ensure the system survived. A psychopathic personality disorder is usually not developed as a defence but more comes from a break down of the defences. Some of the differences can be observed in the way that alters with psychopathic traits tend to respond to therapy and over time grow and heal. Whereas a psychopathic personality disorder commonly will never respond to therapy, Infact they sometimes even can get worse as they learn to manipulate the process.

I absolutely emphasise though with feeling like an alter has psychopathic traits and could understand how your system may have developed these to survive.

SeenIt91, what do you mean by "psychopathy"? Most uses of the term refer to some manner of Axis II personality disorder. DID is not a personality disorder; it is an Axis I trauma disorder, specifically a disorder of identity.

You sound like you think you have a personality disorder. Please don't try to diagnose yourself by reading descriptions of various disorders. That method is error-prone, especially if you have no relevant training or professional experience.
