Why would a little hide literacy?

Postby watching&waiting » Thu Dec 22, 2011 3:13 am

Longtime, no see.

So we have a 3y/o little girl. We *think* she's the original, though we're not sure and have no overwhelming need to find out.

anyway

She's very smart, especially for her age. But for almost a year she hid the fact she can read and write.
Why? She can, she knows she can, there never was any reason for her to hide it - our "mother" was incredibly proud of how "smart" we were. (bragging rights to make her look good -_-)

Just. Confused at the logic behind this.

Hey Im close to our 3yr old alt, Daisie, and shes said that shes scared to ever come across too smart or know too much because of how people will perceive her and not believe her as a child. I think being that young is very scary for them in general, and I know personally that she has many fears.

I think talking to the little and being accepting helps alot, let them know its ok to be a smarty pants :)

hello, Non DID here,
I remember when I was young, I pretended I didnt know how to wash dishes. Dang then I opened my mouth and had to take turns with my brother and sister. urg.... I would picture a three year old might just want to do other things. reading and writing may not be high on the things to do. . play might be ahead of reading and writing,,, maybe stay with the younger books for a while, she may still enjoy those more than something more advanced..., just a guess

Funny. Her name's Daisy. :P

Can you rephrase that though, being afraid no one will believe she's a child?.... I don't understand.

Except we were reading for pleasure at 4 (which is when I came around). I get why, books were an escape, with a happy ending.

It just.. it baffles me. Especially with how we were raised, you'd think showing off intelligence would be a high priority for her (it is for the other kids)

Well, if you didn't know she was the original at first, perhaps she wanted to hide her literacy because otherwise, you might be suspicious about a three-year-old being able to read and write?

Or I think what the other person meant about being afraid that nobody would believe she's a child...sometimes people seem to disbelieve little alters if they don't "sound" little, or if they don't somehow adhere to the developmental standards they "should" be at, so if a 3-year-old is able to read and write, even though that is possible, she might be disbelieved to actually be 3 or something. Which I don't really get...I learned to read when I was 4 myself. And littles aren't really children in the sense that yes, they are X age, but they've gone through so much more development etc. in someone's body, like one of our littles, Baby, is only 4, but she's been 4 for a really long time, so she can do things sometimes that a "normal" 4-year-old outside the body probably couldn't.

We've hidden alot with who we are with DID, Only one person truly knows that we have it, so no family or anything. When shes out shes usually scared of people not accepting her, She would play a online game called secondlife where she was free to be a child and she even there ingame would be worried if she said she knew too much that people would perceive her a different age, or say something to her. Even though nobody ever has, even around family (they are clueless on our DID) but they would always just assume we were in more of a childish mood that day. For the most part shes free and happy and is herself and has no worries, But she has been through quite a bit. I think with coming off smart or knowing alot scares her, especially since shes in an adult body. I think every little is different though, Have a ton of patience and help them anyway possible :)
