new alters?

can alters form in your system for no apparent reason at all? a friend o mine might have a new one and we don't know why

I believe a previously unknown alter can surface for no apparent reason, because the reason why an alter appears is not always clear, but alters can't be formed for no reason at all. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe your friend's alter has been lurking for a while.
