Thought I wasn't Switching In Front of My Room Mate...

Postby LuckyOphelia » Sun Nov 27, 2011 8:37 pm

My room mate knows about my DID, I told her a while back and we havent talked much about it. So yesterday I came home and decided to watch that show United States of Tara. Well I guess it broke the ice a bit about my DID and I was saying how the switches in the show were much more exaggerated than my switches. She told me that I didn't switch TOO drastically, but then went on to tell me that she could DEFINITELY tell differences when i switched.

I was a little shockd to say the least....I know one of the teenagers has come out just a few times before, but to my knowledge no one else. She told me that she can tell when I switch too. She said with one of them I slap my hands on my legs and change my posture and sit up straight, she calls that one the "princess/debutante." Then she said there's another one, a "ghetto girl" who likes to use the F word a lot (AH!) who I think is the teenager Ellie...and she also said shes seen a little kid once or twice which was what surprised me the most because I don't remember that at all :(
I thought I was doing a lot better at hiding my switches in front of my roommate, but turns out I'm not...so kind of a shocker to me.
I'm just glad my roommates cool about it, we're best friends and she's gone through a lot in her life too so she understands and I actually helped motivate her to go back to therapy which is good. Anyways sorry for the long read, just was having a little freak out...

I know how that feels... I told one of my friends about it too and he definetely noticed. Mostly because one of us appreciates violence alot and he got a fill of abuse (Surprisingly, he still trusts me and doesn't really seem to hold grudges when I hit him).

Hello,
could the switching in front of the room mate be because your aware she knows about it and your others might feel more comfortable around her?

I thought I never switched, but then... 1. Someone to whom I disclosed my DID replied uh huh, he already knew. He even told me the occasion when he noticed me switching, and in retrospect I have to agree that I was switching. 2. Reading Marlene Steinberg's 1995 groundbreaking Handbook for the Assessment of Dissociation: A Clinical Guide, I see that I may be switching during sessions with my therapist without either of us noticing. The clue is that I become suddenly disoriented re what time it is and what we are talking about.

I think so. She said it didn't bother her. It's kind of nerve wracking on my end though.

Sometimes I do this thing where I click my tounge and then lose time for a few minutes. I can sometimes tell when Jill has been out because I have fingernail scratches on my arms. Not ones that cut, but red lines that are clearly scratches. When I get very frustrated, I scratch my head. I'm still me but can't stop scratching my head and my ears ring a bit and I get dizzy.

My others seem to make themselves known. I doubt anyone in my life relates these things to switching as no one knows about my DID, but now that I know about my DID, I notice them more. I have no idea who does what, but I do know it is Jill that scratches and I have complete or near complete time loss with her. If I do remember anything with Jill, it is just how the body moved- she fidgets and all I have memory of is my legs twitching and my toes moving a lot.

I wonder how it all looks on the outside for someone watching me switch.
