Where Do Your Names Come From?

Postby MK91 » Wed Nov 23, 2011 3:36 pm

Just out of curiosity while we've got a topic about where your screen names come from.

Where do the names of your alters come from? Were they influenced by something/someone or did they choose their own names? Did someone inside or outside the system name them?

Yohann = The physical body's name (Johann) spelled the way it's pronounced
Luke = He introduced himself to me as 'the light spirit of the body' therefore I dubbed him 'Luke' because 'lux' is 'light' in Latin, even though we now know his real name is Johann
HIM = Has always had that name, doesn't want a name
Jack = Named himself with the first name he could come up with and just stuck with it
Johnny = When Johann was little kids would tease him and call him 'Johnny' too lazy to remember his real name, and Johnny took to the name when he split
Kiddo = His real name is Chibi Johnny ('chibi' is Japanese for little), because he's a younger split of Johnny. I used to tease him by calling him 'kiddo' because it frustrated him, but eventually he adopted it as his name
Chibi = His real name is Chibi Johann because he's the youngest alter in the system and when he was host he also when by Johann, I shortened it to just Chibi when Chibi Johnny's name changed to Kiddo so their names would still match
Dante = Named after Dante Alighieri the writer of The Divine Comedy, focusing mainly on his writing Inferno. Before that everyone in the system insisted on calling him 'IT', but when I suggested calling him Dante, he took to it. He now oddly enough claims that was his name before I gave it to him, though.

I don't know for all of them but there are some I know.

Molly came from my doll Holly.
Jill came from my real name being Julie. People called me Jul (like jewel) but some people over heard that and thought my name was Jill. I never corrected them. I liked going by different names.
Alice comes from Through the Looking Glass, no doubt. She fell in the rabbit hole- my Alice was put in a wishing well to keep her from hurting body.
Doc is also known as Voice. She is our inner T and the voice inside I hear when I don't feel strong enough. So, she is our doctor and our voice of reason.
Azel comes from azul I think, the spanish word for "blue". Most things in the inner world that are good are blue and glow with a blue light. Azel always has blue lights, blue energy, and blue orbs around him. When things are bad for me in the inner world, his skin turns a little blue when he gets stronger.

I'm not sure where the rest of the names come from, but those are the few I know.

I'm not sure where everyone's names came from, but I have some ideas.

Ellie - this is actually very close to my real name.
C - C tells me that her name means butterfly. One of the people in my childhood used to paint butterflies on everything.
Beverly - is an introject & has the same name as the person she came from.
Snow - comes from the fact that she's a snow leopard and also whites everyone out like a snow storm.

Those are the only ones I know any reasoning behind.
We're not invited.

Jason's name has evolved from "the boy nobody" who he used to refer himself as. I think whilst I was beginning to accept the alters more, he was getting more respect for himself, and chose his name.
Alice is from Alice in Wonderland. She picked it up from our old therapist who described our childhood as something out of alice and wonderland.
Jason told me Bobby's name and the rest just told me their own names so I don't really know where they came from.

Coincidentally, I did a blog entry about this not long ago.

To be honest, being born under the pedestrian name John, I wish we had a few more cool names like Juniper, Korak, Bartholomew, Gulliver, Zoroaster, Drizzle, Aristotle, Bogeyman, Molybdenum (with all due respect to Tungsten!) or even Smash Face, but I guess we'll have to make due with Sphinx and Quato.

Hmmm...
Elizabeth was named after her mom(not mine)
Charlie took his named from a kid in pre-K
Mr.Lee, was origanally called Licie by the abuser, but little sister called him Lili or Li cause she was too young to pronounce the 'c' sound, so he adapted it to Mr.Lee.
Joan, cause she likes the joan of arc, I used to call her denial girl.
Rider picked his name, I don't know what it means or why.
Banshee, I named cause she used to look like a dementor/banshee, and would scream bloody murder.
And Little, cause she's little, I named her, so far she hasn't protested so..were good.
Whirlwind, I named her cause, she makes me feel dizzy, and I always see her standing in the middle of a wind tunnel.
Parent introjects go by their names.
Dead one, I haven't talked to really, this may be the one that whispers and mostly ignores me went out front. (Shes cool though).

Let's see...

Sarah--is the birth name, is my name...my parents just picked it?
Baby--I think because she's so young (she's 4).
Rainbow Sunshine--because it's a really happy go lucky sort of name, and made up of pretty things. XD
Dragonfly--because she likes dragonflies, and it was better than "tomboy" as a name. :P
Little Miss Margaret--because our father used to call us this.
Autumn--because...I don't really know, I think because she was created during this past fall.

dreamer--no idea why this is her name...she's an angel and a gatekeeper, though, maybe it comes from something like that?
Lissabeth--I think just because it's adorable and she's adorable.
Miracle--because him/her surviving was a miracle? :/
Daddy's Little Defect--she picked it because that's how she feels.
freak--what they were always called. :/
"Angel"--just calling her this for now because of the song "Concrete Angel." Actually have no idea what her name is. She has amnesia from a head injury.

Devon--because of Disturbed: "Inside the Fire," she won't tell us her real name...
"Alice"--from Alice in Wonderland, although it's not her real name, either...
Ophelia--from Hamlet because she was drowning inside for years.
Lolly--full name Lolita Grace, she got it from the book Lolita.
Karenina--have no idea, maybe from Anna Karenina?

Also have a new little one, but she's nameless at the moment...not allowed to know her name, so can't tell you where it comes from.

Hmmm.

Sunbul - this is our birth name. I'm tempted to make a comment on how she's not particularly imaginative, but she was a) the first one here, and so there's not much reason to have a different name and b) it's a cool ###$' name.
Rocket - ooh, there's tons of rocket imagery. Well, for starters, there's the Smashing Pumpkins song of that title which includes the lyrics 'The moon is out, the stars invite/I think I'll leave tonight' - a sentiment she would definitely agree with - though I'm not sure what her relationship with the song is. There's also, as my psych pointed out, the fact that she's much like a literal rocket, liable to loudly explode. Or something. And... er... I can't remember what else. It's also quite masculine, at least according to the mainstream Western culture of today - in modern mainstream media (alliteration, yay!) how likely is it that a little boy will have a space-themed bedroom compared to children of any other gender? I dunno. If we ever actually have some sort of cordial relationship, I'll ask.
Eris - I assume that she chose this as a direct reference to the Greek mythological goddess of strife and discord of the same name.
Travelling Woman - It sounds like it'd be self-explanatory, wouldn't it? However, this name's not really ALL she is. I've a sneaking suspicion she may be some sort of deity. Oh well. It's probably taken from an amazingly beautiful Bat For Lashes song of the same name.
Zero - of course this one was taken from the Smashing Pumpkins song. When he was upset he'd be practically the personification of it.
Maryam - The Islamic version of the name 'Mary', with all the connotations you'd think of with that name. I have a sneaking suspicion that telling everyone that your illegitimate baby's father was God sounded like a brilliant plan to her. (Don't mind me, I've been reading Richard Dawkins lately.) [/skeptic]

Susan- birth name. I was named after my grandmother. I hate this name; my grandmother hated my father and took us away often...I prefer Linaeve or Lin, though our Lin took it as his. :P
Cheryl- she freely gave this name in her journal. I think we used to know someone named Cheryl, but I'm not sure and Cheryl isnt telling (she doesn't like me much).
Lin- named himself after showing up on this site. He says he has another name, but isn't fond of it. Lin is short and to the point, like his personality (his words, not mine!). :)
Eve- her and Lin tag teamed my favorite name. Lin treats Eve as a daughter, and she wanted to emulate (I think that's the word I'm looking for) him.
Sara- we knew a girl on the boat (navy ship) who was a big party-er. Sara wanted to become her and took her name as a result.
Sarah- a girl we knew from high school who passed before graduation. She was the motherly type, and we looked up to her. When she passed, Sarah wanted to honor her name and took it as her own.
Sam- I gave Sam her name long ago, when I fIrst noticed my rage. I figured with a name, itd be easier to contain her. I didn't see her as a person then...but she kept the name. Though she prefers 'Slap'.
The Box- recent arrival. Box was Sam's Keeper. I guess after years of referring to him as 'the Box' made him attached to that name.
Susan (1)[24]-ANP/Host.
Susan (2)[24]-Apathetic.
Eve (1) [4-6]-craves touch.
Lin (2) [late 20's]-logical.
Cheryl (1) [16]-Social.
Cheryl (2) [18-19]-'Cleans up chaos'.
Sara (1) [17-18]-Sexual.
Sarah(2) [early 20's]-wife-type.
Sam (1) [unsure]-Anger and repression.
The Box (2) [unsure]-Sam's jailer, persecutor.
