I got a 36...around what I expected, since a) it's hard for me to keep track of exactly how much of the time I experience those symptoms and b) most of the time, my others stay behind a kind of wall inside my brain and don't affect me in extreme dissociative ways.
While I think it's great that this tool exists, I think it's a bit flawed. For one, it seems to focus more on amnesia and the moderate to extreme traits of depersonalization and derealization, so that those with more severe disorders are more likely to be picked up on than those with more subtle variants. Also, it doesn't allow for variations on the experiences in question, or ask for their severity; just their frequency. I found myself saying "Technically yes/no, but..." many times while taking it, which was frustrating. Obviously a screening tool is supposed to look for the major signs, but dissociation is so personal and so varied that someone who experiences it in one way might not identify with the 'classic' symptoms screened for by the DES.
"The Stranger in the Mirror" has a really good sample of the SCID-D in it that hits many more bases than the DES, if anyone is interested in that. I've been trying to figure out how to properly be administered that test for a while....though considering my therapist has yet to learn that I have even mild problems with dissociation, it's not likely to be any time soon.
