Netflix has seasons 1 and 2. Maybe this means Netflix will have (current) season 3 sooner.

I posted this same question on my thread before seeing this one, so I want to repost it here to see what more people think:

It seems that there are mixed reviews about this show for people who have DID. The U.S. of Tara was pretty much the only representation of DID in the media, and since movies and TV are largely responsible for society's attitude toward everything, I was wondering if you thought it was more positive or negative. Do you think it would be better if society saw a more true version of DID in the media? Would you all want to see a truer version on TV? I really believe that film and TV is one of the only art forms that truly has the power to inspire and create change, and I've always wanted to see society's views on mental disorders and mental illness evolve into something with a more positive representation.
Life is precious / which is all we poets / wrapped in our loneliness / are trying to say

I found that even though the United States of Tara was exaggerated somewhat
and had some incorrect facts (such as meds making alters go away) it was pretty
similar to certain types of DID.
I'm aware however that that specific presentation is rare in DID and it would be good
to have a character with DID in a series that doesn't have the spotlight on them, with
more of a inclusive and less irregular feel to it.
I found the series a good 'ice breaker' for the very important people in my family to discuss
it with me (what is fact, what is fiction, how is your experience) although
it would be nice to see something a little more realistic and less dramatized.

The series is very triggering for those early in therapy (I didn't even remember the
first season) although I'm able to watch it now there are still scenes that get me going!

Re: United States of Tara Cancelled *TRIGGER*

Postby Una+ » Wed May 25, 2011 3:02 pm

I have not watched all the episodes yet but most that I have watched have been triggering for me. It has been an interesting experience. My husband was resistant at first but recently he has begun watching with me and although he dislikes the campiness, and there are some misrepresentations, watching the series is giving him a much better idea of what I am going through and what is ahead for him and our children. We are both thankful that I have so little lost time, but now I understand this means that my alters have massive blocks of lost time. Subjectively, their experience is that they have amnesia for most of their lives.

I liked alot of the US of T, but my family felt it did not adequately show the true struggles,
first, financially...although that was beginning to change with the character of the husband having
to sell his biz. This is an expensive illness both to have and to treat. By the way, I had to watch
the show at a friend's house because I can no longer afford to pay to watch TV, considering
the medical bills, the bills my alters have run up, etc.

My husband did not like the show and felt the characters were over the top exagerated.
Alot of it was triggering for me. But I do support getting the topic of DID out there.
And Toni Collette is a marvelous actress, by the way.

And as far as the character of T goes, my own teenage girl in my head sure loved her, as well as the characters
of Tara's children.
