Dissociation and reading

Postby NeedHelp1234 » Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:41 am

This probably sounds stupid but I was wondering if there is a connection to dissociation and reading/general understanding of things.

Like when I'm watching TV or reading something and I'm "not quite here", I swear I'm reading something the right way, but then when I re-read it it's not at all what I thought I read. Kinda like dyslexia? I know Emily in here has issues with reading and writing things in the wrong order at first glance, maybe I'm experiencing this when she's around but not completely out?

If there's any connection between the two I was just curious if anyone else has this problem. It's almost impossible to comprehend something when I'm completely out of it with reality and I hate sounding like I'm stupid for not reading things right to people. Does this happen to anyone else?

Yeah, I think so. I'm like that probably 90% of the time... such fun  The spacier I am, and the louder my head is, the harder it is to understand anything. I used to read a lot, but since the spaciness got really bad, it's too hard to read much. I keep having to re-read everything, to make sure I understood what I read. When it's really bad, I can't understand anything, no matter how much I try to focus or re-read.

I switch words around, when I read them, too :P I don't think that's related to dissociation, though...

And if Emily is there with you, she can affect the way you feel and view things.

Ahh that makes a lot of sense. It's so frustrating! I also switch words around whenever I feel like I can't comprehend anything so if it is or isn't dissociation related, it's still really annoying hehe.

I know exactly how that feels. I used to be a major reader. Like, I'd read about two books a day. But, lately, I'll find myself reading and sometimes the words get flipped around, or sometimes they look like they're moving or something. Or, if I'm spacing out, or they're being annoying, I won't be 'reading' but my eyes keep going and when I zone back in, I'll look at the page and be like "Whoa o_O What just happened?"

Ahh that happens to me all the time! It's like my eyes are trying so hard to take in the information but my brain has so much other crap going on (or I'm lost in the blankness) that no matter how many times they re-read the same things, it does not compute haha.

Emily has said she thinks she is dyslexic though so maybe she flips the words around when I'm reading, but even without her doing that concentration is shot to hell half the time. I miss being able to read something out loud to someone and know by the time I finished what I just said!

Same here. It can happen instantly out of nowhere too. It feels strange, because you feel connected, but theres something that is completely "off". Then other times nothing seems real, so its no surprise. Thats just my experience though.

That's happened to us, especially in classes where we're supposed to be concentrating. We can write really well if one of us goes into rest - that's Mira's thing and mine - but I can't manage grasp much of anything going on in a book or article or whatever it is I'm trying to focus on. :/
