DID in the Media!

Postby SchizieMcGee » Sun Apr 05, 2009 5:40 pm

I've just compile a list every piece of media I can think of that expose DID. It's not very long... don't be afraid to add to the list. Some I think weer misdiagnosed, like the guy in Me,Myself and Irene. This list was preperation for a class assignment:

The Three Faces of Eve 1957
Me Myself and Irene 2000
Psycho
The United States of Tara

I decided to do my project on the United States of Tara. Are there any others here who have seen this show? What do you think of the following movies and how they portray people who suffer (or dont suffer :P) of DID?

Sybil, Multiplicity
"A man goes far to find out what he is--
Death of the self in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?"

There is:

Book

A life in pieces .. written on Karen Overhill by Richard K Baer ?

Movies

Identity
Hide and Seek

Though i think MPD and DID is different to one another.. no?
Like MPD you can only develop that prior your personality fully developing at age 7 approx
But DID people can develop that when they experience trauma/ nervous breakdown and then the subconscious starts to split using memories of their past and you know giving them an *other* to help them with daily life, needs.... and after the personality fully develops ?
But who knows i'm no expert, sorry for this slight bit of whatever i just said ;) (just trying to clarify confusing concepts, don't mind me ;)

There's a thread somewhere in the backlogs here that details a lot of DID-related movies, books and games etc. It's quite extensive.
*here it is* http://psychforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=10894

DID and MPD are the same thing. They just changed the name of the disorder in the DSM-IV about a decade ago. Also you can develop DID at any age, and although it's more commonly related to events happening during childhood, it can actually develop at any age, due to any form of trauma.
It's very hard to say at what age a personality fully* develops. I don't think a value can be placed on it.
Hope that helps clarify things.
