As far as helpful, as in "really helped my system get it together", the best was "Got Parts?". As far as helping others understand, "The Dissociative Identity Disorder Sourcebook" was great. For personal experience, we really liked "First Person Plural" though it can be very triggering.
"A man goes far to find out what he is--
Death of the self in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?"

yep, i second "First Person Plural" --i read it twice.

the sourcebook is great for general information for the person with DID and friends/family.

First Person Plural is remarkably well written, but I can see how it would be triggering for people with DID. The author is one smart guy... I hope he writes more about living with DID now that it's been years since FPP came out.

When Rabbit Howls is very interesting, but I imagine it would be profoundly triggering as it contains vivid descriptions of the abuse. Aside from the flashbacks, the here-and-now descriptions of the subject's life are quite informative.

GOT Parts is amazing. I keep it within easy reach at all times. It is a terrific resource for organizing your alters.
