Hi. I'm new and have a question.

Postby EternusCaries » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:26 am

I have a question about DID/MPD. I have been diagnosed with it since I was 13 however I'm too afraid to tell my psychologist much more about my disorder besides the fact that there are 3 male voices that basically have their own lives inside of my head. The reason why I haven't told her anymore is because I'm not sure if my DID/MPD is 'normal'. Is it normal for my alters to take on the forms of book characters? I would love to hear everyone's opinion.

Thank you,

Nicole

Hi EternusCaries,

DID/MPD sometimes is different from others, due to how or why a person has alters to begin with. I would suggest talking to your
psych. I know you might feel afraid, but that is ok and normal.
If you want just jot down a few lines about it share that. You could let her read it, that way you don't have to say it.

best wishes to all of you,
Red

Alters of opposite gender is perfectly normal. Not everyone gets that fun, but it does happen. You can even get alters from different race, age, nationality, etc. You could get an alter from Germany, and not understand a word they say. This is all perfectly reasonable in the wonderful world of DID.

Definitely talk to your doctor about it.

Hi EternusCaries, my name's Harri. Most of my alters are story characters I 'invented' as a child. About half my alters are male, half are female. It's more or less evenly spread in terms of gender.

I find though, that my most destructive and dangerous alter is male. I found that researching a lot into Carl Jung's Animus archetype theory helped me a lot. From the sounds of things, this might benefit you too, in some small way.

One alter of mine has always been under the impression that she does not really have DID, that she is just an author inventing stories - only the characters come out and take part in her life. It's a bit of a weird perspective, and gets scary when you start thinking about it too much... But anyway, it always ALWAYS has helped me to talk *in confidence* to someone about these things, particularly about my animus, because when it's something like that, it's often hard to make other people see, but painful to keep it inside for too long...

Hope to see you again on these forums!

Right now, as you read this, does it amount to anything more than a collection of thoughts and memories which are just transitory, and come and go in the mind like clouds in the sky? --

i don't know i must be weird. when i was very young i use to talk to someone i called cricket. i got the name from watching Pinnocio, you know, the wooden boy that turned into a real boy. i never "saw" cricket, but he would follow me around, and help me out if he could. as i grew up, he grew into some kind of spiritual guide. nothing really weird. he just talked to me when i needed it most.

that is the only one i can think of that is a character. all of the others just kind of appeared out of nowhere. alters that could survive in several very different environments. one a biker, dresses like a biker (i have to keep an eye on her, she can be very destructive if she sets her mind on it.) another, is a "flower girl" hippy. she is very laid back, peaceful, and caring. she dresses kind of weird, like someone from the 60's. and patchouly  don't get me started. aaaaaah

i have masculine alters (like biker girl) i call them "she" , and they argue with me about it. they don't like women. they're not gay. i guess you could say they are kind of like "tom boys" they like to be tough and do guy things.

benny :D

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I am just curious. . . are they book characters that you created or characters from books you have read as if an insider is living "as that character"? I feel often times that an insider - okay. .. this is hard to explain.
let me start from the beginning. im still mapping my insiders and "getting to know" everyone. at times im still in "denial" - or at least some in here are. . . sometimes when i "meet" a new insider it gets really confusing and hard for me - almost as if they are playing games with me. Like I will meet someone new and try talking to them - and they seem SOOO familiar and then i realize - wait - i had a friend named so and so and this is what they were like - but that is real life, not just my imaginary little world in my head, that cant be cause that is a real person and a seperate person from me. I almost feel as if im trying to be someone else or something - but i know consciously im not. then after more talk and that particular insider coming around more - the qualities of that insider are similar to someone i knew but they are still part of me and not that other person - i dont know if they are trying to trick me or if they are in denial as well or if they are using something "familiar" to me so im not so scared, or what. . . it usually ends up that its more like they are saying "I'm a lot like this person", but eventaully i get their name and a couple have told me their stories as well. It's not so bad really - because i am remembering things i never remembered before and friends that i had that are from a part of my life that is just "missing" from my memory.
I wouldn't be scared to talk to your therapist about it though because that is what they are there for. if you don't trust your therapist enough maybe you will in time- or maybe its time to find a new one that you can trust with everything. (Not trying to tell you what to do, just putting in my 2 cents. . . )

hello , am new here , so a late addition to the thread.

For me, my other parts have names of people who have made a huge impact on my imagination and psyche, often having characteristics i dont have. Like one is very studious and does the academic stuff and so on.

So, guess am saying each part with its role, kinda has a name that resonates with the character they associate with. Maybe it is similar to what you describe. Do yours have qualities that in day to day life are nt always present?

It does suck though, ultimately means depending on who is out, and levels of co consciousness, you either get to know what happened or you dont. Maybe that is for another thread.

Good luck on your journey, am at the beginning of mine and would definately say sharing with your t is a good thing. It can only help .

Take all the support you can get, this is a long road.

Look after yourself
