I wondered if alters exist, should there exist some inner guide telling the true self at any given moment?
I found something like that in my OSDD case, and it is sometimes telling one alter to front, sometimes other alter, but focuses on one or two alters most of the time.

In DID and some OSDD cases, there is no "true self" stronger than others because the brain did not have time to build a "true self" before the dissociation started.
If you mean "an alter deciding who will front when" this kind of role is called a gatekeeper. The gatekeeper does not always decide everything but they keep the inside organized to the best of their abilities. Such as, keeping vulnerable alters away from memories that could hurt them, pushing to the front the alters who might be best suited to handle a situation, etc.
Hope I understood your question and managed to answer!

We came on to say Gatekeeper too, in our system its a job that more than one can do or a couple best for the job can work in shifts.
I guess it would depend how big your system was too, if its only a really small system it maybe the same person all the time?

By true self I meant the best possible alter for given situation and that alter in best possible way. In other words, the inner guide that tells the system's best response in given situation.

In which case you may find it differs between systems. for example in ours I am seen as 'the original child' which would be the same as the 'true self' this is because I remained hidden whilst other alters were being created to be 'programmed to be Neurotypical' and seen as 'social masks'
I have not always been our systems 'gatekeeper' though and in our system 'Gatekeeper' and 'original/true self' does not mean the same.
Our 'inner guides' are the changelings. I would say it will depend on your system, why it was created and what it was influenced by.

Oh okay.
Well sometimes there is one specific alters who is like the "railroad switch" for that, sometimes the system as a whole just "knows", sometimes it's a mix between the two.
In all cases, when an alter ends up fronting, it's because the brain as a whole decided this alter was the best suited for the situation. The logic behind it might be difficult to see at first: sometimes the system needs an alter who can cope with the emotions of a situation rather than one who can behave the best, because protecting the system from a new split is more important than having the best behavior. And it's difficult to see and understand this kind of logic when it's only the beginning of the journey.

Your responses helped me, thank you. I struggle to find the right words and explanations before someone tries to understand what I am telling. So, 'inner guide' is specific to system; in my case I actually figured out how my brain handles 'which alter to front', understanding it helps things be much more functional.
