Can/Does Memory Get Better?

Postby spinningtops » Fri Oct 27, 2023 1:05 am

I have a poor memory possibly due to trauma, and am wondering if others have had their memory improve with work on it? work on traumas? Or does it stay the same?

Daily and more than daily grounding exercises helped me a lot. Anything integration related (healing trauma, sharing ressources, sensory integration therapy...) helped, too.

Our memory also got affected from our stroke plus the gaps in memory from past alters who were disconnected from each other and we've managed to have some improvement. The brain can learn to re route itself even after physical damage.

I think with regard to DID its about working out who was fronting for the periods you can't remember then seeing if you can find a way to communicate with them. ...they might not want to share the memory but you could ask them just to confirm they were the one present in that period and are guarding those memories to protect others in your system? ..if you make a note of it you might start to see a pattern (maybe it was always that alter out front for every missing memory period etc)

I think that sometimes it does get better.

Part of my trauma was to do with neglect and sometimes when I'm doing just mundane things and one of my littles fronts she can remember things. And the memory comes in the form of my little (Eva) just talking in her own way about it. It's not earth shattering stuff but I think memories only come if and when you are ready to cope with them.

I'm glad you got your evaluation done BTW. That must give you a sense of closure.

I was kinda already struggling. After getting covid I forgotten how to play all the songs I had listed on my guitar by memory. Don't seem to get better for me.

Thanks it's good to know memory can improve. I am gonna be hopeful on that and believe mine should get better.
Yeah it is probably good to have closure. I think yeah.
But, i am hopeful that now that i have a trauma therapist who works with Did. That maybe with time some of this will hopefully get better. I hope so.. I guess if it doesn't then it's best not to worry too much though.

Also I noticed today that every week on the day after I go to therapy I get more memory. Its as if when I talk about something to him then that helps to clear the way for more things to come through.

They're not always big things but things nonetheless and then when I go and talk to him again next week then it'll open the way for something else to come through.

By my personal experience:
Try to learn something new (language, hobby, etc) for improve memory working. It helps your personal memory, not other alters. It also can make your more stable and more active time. But i not pretty sure about more time, may be it wasnt connected to my language learning.
Add some physical exercises on your life. Running or something like this. It makes yours brain to works better and helps with memory all of your alters too.
Try less comunicate in inner world, i think that it can damage memory of other alters sometime.

The experiences of memory will get better and sometimes it will get worse day to day.
