Do Others Know?

Postby Escape Artist » Tue Sep 18, 2007 1:30 am

Yea..do your friends or parents know about your DID/MPD?

I recently told my friends, like in July I told them...its really weird to talk to them about it though because I always feel like I'm going insane and they're gonna think I'm crazy or something.

...so yea, have you guys told anyone? And how did/do they react?
I'm all at sea
Where no one can bother me
Forgot my roots
If only for a day
Just me and my thoughts
Sailing far away...

I've told a few people, and one person has stopped talking to me. Another was just, like, okay, let me help you if you need it LOL. And another thought it was really cool.

So I've had many reactions.

Peace,
Mike
I can carry the whole weight of the world on myself and not have a problem, but as soon as I add my own, it's impossible.

Never know what you'll learn today - maybe something new. Did you know [insert traumatic experience] happened? Well today you had that flashback! Gee whiz, isn't life just WONDERFUL? :D

I've only told my friend Charlie, and he was like "That doesn't even surprise me". He loves my alter Frank, he thinks he's hysterical when Frank comes out ranting and raving about getting drunk and going wild :D

ya, i told my friend pam, and she's like, "ahhh, i knew it, cool!". here i thought i was breaking this bad news, and everybody acts like they already knew, or thought, "oh, so that explains things." i felt like asking, "why didn't anybody tell me! i've spent 10 ######6 years in therapy to find out what the ###$ was wrong with me!"

I received a variety of reactions to my having DID. My partner doesn't want to acknowlege any "mental" diagnosis, and refuses to learn about it. Two friends of mine didn't even flinch when I told them and reassured me that, not only had they guessed it ahead of my telling them, but that they were supportive and like ALL of me. And then theres this one woman who...is my rock, my best friend, and the ONLY one who "gets" me. I am very, very grateful for her.
So, to answer your question....4 people know
The less I seek for some definitive, the closer I am to fine

I can totally understand, Dark. My partner does not acknowledge anything is wrong. I leave a DID book on my table, she sees and pretends it is nothing. But I also have someone very special who gets me. We have a bond that will never be broken by anyone. I have friends who know about my DID but my best friend is really the only one that matters. She keeps me grounded and she wraps her love around me and I am so grateful that I have her in my life.

Yes some people in my life know.
My family knows, and they are very supportive, although my dad is affraid of it and brushes over the topic when it comes up. My sisters love my alters like their sisters, and treat them accordingly. One more then the other.
I have a few friends who know and their reactions have varied from that explains everything to ignoring the fact.
My Sorority knows, and it was an unavoidable telling, if I didnt tell them I would not be excused from things that my system was not ready to handle, and if I did tell them how would they react? They were all supportive even if they didnt understand. And it is nice to know that those people are there for me regardless of them truly understanding what it is I am going through.
It is very helpful to have those around you know, because you don't feel so awful when a situation arises and they are around.
