Hi my name is Dan. I'm scared as I'm out for the first time by myself. I feel awful.

& Hello Dan !

& Take a deep breath, it's going to be okay! It's scary at first but being out can be fun too! Once the chores are done, we can have fun and that's completely rad!

& Welcome to the forums!

Welcome, Dan. Nice to meet you. People here are like super nice and welcoming, and we (collectively- on these forums) understand what you're going through and feeling. But if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed or scared, it's ok. Just take it slow and as you feel comfortable. :)

We're happy to have you here with us!

Thanks guys. I introduced myself to the hosts husband in the middle of the night and he really helped me. I’m struggling with working out what’s going on. Nightmares are so bad but the hosts husband gave me cuddles and comforted me. I’m just so confused with everything. -Dan

I hope that my summary of "what is going on" will help.

You are a member of a team. You just woke up. You might need time to catch up with the main "storyline" (what happens with the physical body, the tasks that need to be done on an everyday basis such as housechores, work, health care...) but you are not alone. Even if it can be difficult at first to find a way to communicate with your teammates, you will find a way to reach out to each-others.

Your common quest as a team is: having a nice, fulfilling, happy life, and protecting/helping/caring for each-others. This might include, facing together bad memories, painful emotions... but this is done one step at a time, when you are ready.

Just like in any team, it might take time to get to know everybody. And you might never become the bestest friend with some of your team-mates. But it is alright as long as there is mutual respect and an ability to work together.

You might sometimes need to catch up with something in-progress that another team-mate started. This is confusing at first. But with time, you will find ways to better communicate with each-others and the "catching up in the middle of the thing" will happen more smoothly.

Do not forget to take some time figuring out who you are, what are your likes/dislikes, and also, take some time having fun (once the needs-to-be-done are finished).

Good luck with your life. It is not always easy, it is often confusing, but there are nice things in it, so it is totally worth living. I can promise you that.

Thank you all for being so understanding. It’s just really confusing. I know a lot about myself, but I have no idea what’s going on around me. Hosts husband is great and really understanding. I just feel so lost and frightened. I can’t stop horrible memories and it’s like I’m back there again and it’s scary. Thank you all for your advice. It’s really appreciated.

This is called a traumatic flashback. Anchoring techniques help keeping the bad memories at bay and focusing on the here and know. These techniques include, but are not limited to:

• Focusing on breathing slowly, especially taking a little bit more time breathing out than breathing in.

• Drawing or colouring.

• Looking around you and naming aloud: 5 things around you that you can see - 4 things that you can touch - 3 things that you can hear - 2 things that you can smell - 1 thing that you can taste. Repeat as needed.

The unpleasant, past memories, still hurt. But you are safe here and now. Never forget that.
