New ‘job’ ideas?

Postby companionwolf » Fri Dec 18, 2020 5:41 pm

So something we do to help any parts with maladaptive behavior/who just want something to do is we figure out a new ‘job’ for them - for example, a angry part now helps us with maintaining a exercise routine, and a formerly suicidal part now helps with socialization and managing the anxiety that comes from that sometimes. Others have smaller jobs like ‘reminding us to brush teeth’ and ‘reminding us to use the physical journal’. (This isn’t a forced thing and not all of our parts have defined or assigned jobs - just the folks who find that a different ‘job’ helps them and those who want one.)

Some parts have recently come out of dormancy and now don’t have the same ‘job’ as they did when they were around before, and we’re trying to figure out things for them to do. They’re both former host/main front/daily life parts from early/middle adolescence. (We don’t actually know why they’re back NOW or why they stopped hosting when they did —we have a theory for why one of them is back tho— but that’s a whole other worm can.)

Does anyone have any ideas? One of them is going to try writing stories again, since they did that as a hobby back when they were last out, but I was wondering anyone had any other suggestions since I know this will probably come up again. (I’m going to update the therapist on all this and ask this Q at our next session too.)

Maybe it would be best to keep going with this idea of doing things that are creative/engaging? Especially if they've come from kinda like early adolescence. Tho I guess it's also important that you don't make them feel like they're babied. Maybe you could tell them to pick up a new hobby or read new stories or organize things? It could even be like a chore they used to do that's fairly simple like folding clothes or sweeping. I guess if they'd rather not be in charge/front then maybe it could even be like "reminder to take a break" or "pick the music/clothes for today".

Im just thinkin of things I would've liked to do when I was younger that didn't feel annoying or exhausting!!! And Ken chipped in with reminding me that not everyone can be in charge lots :)

& I agree with Calicrystal. Sometimes, a good "job" for someone can simply be "feel happiness for eating chocolate and share the happiness with the rest of the system". Also, sharing positive things with other alters, is a good way to built co-consciousness and lower amnesia!
