Reliving something you have no memory of?

Postby Western » Fri Nov 13, 2020 8:16 pm

This has been troubling me all day and I can't even make sense of it. Don't know what it is, whether it's to do with with dissociation, ptsd or neither or both. I have phoned my therapist but she's not got back to me.

I went to bed last night and was unable to sleep so that is how I know that it wasn't a dream and I wasn't even in that half awake, half asleep state where things can get confusing. No I was fully awake and thinking normal thoughts when it happened.

All of a sudden it was like I'd been dragged into a different place and then someone was putting something over my head time and time again as if on a loop. It was horrendous and really scary. I managed to bite their arm and at that point I returned to my bed, fully awake, shaking and terrified.

Like I say i know I wasn't asleep when this happened. I feel like i was being shown a clip of something that I have no recollection of. I don't know who was covering my face and it was in pitch darkness.

Does anyone have any similar experience?

You can have flashbacks of things that you don't have conscious memory of. Even if the literal memory isn't accurate, the feelings associated with it are real. I hope you can take care of whoever was showing you that, and do some self-care in general. And also let your therapist know about it so they can provide support and help you explore it more if you feel like that's something helpful to do.

Thank you.

This has been happening for many years and I've not really had much help because I've been passing it off as sleep paralysis. After the other night though and knowing that I definitely wasn't asleep I can no longer say that and I have to face the fact that it is something else.

It's kind of easier in a way because even though I have no recollection of the actual memory I can sort of see what happened and come to terms with it.

As for the part of me that is showing me the memory: I addressed her straight away. It's hard to know what to say when you're so terrified but I just told her that I was so sorry for what happened to her and I tried to make her feel safe.
