BENEFITS of DIAGNOSIS? of TREATMENT?

Postby holliswoods1 » Sat Oct 19, 2019 9:20 pm

Not everyone lives in a place where diagnosis is possible/helpful/or even acceptable.

For those of us who need some encouragement to overcome these before seeking treatment/diagnosis, can those who have received diagnosis/treatment share some positive outcomes/benefits from doing so?

What difference has this made, where would you probably be now if there hadn't been a diagnosis?

Much appreciated! <3

I have never actively looked for a T or treatment, it just sort of came about. I often ask myself where i would be now if not for diagnosis and treatment and i can’t decide if i am happy about having it or not. I have definitely done better career wise with treatment and i got out of a very unsatisfactory marriage and stopped seeing people who were toxic for one reason or another.
However, its not been replaced by anything . I know myself better than i would otherwise and have been able to avoid pitfalls. What i haven’t been able to do is find better relationships or activities or interests to make life for filling. So, i sometimes wonder if being totally unknowing would have been better...
Diagnosed DID with a few other states.

if you can handle things alone you should be fine.
but the moment you need professional help Ts or docs or whoever will give you a dx, that is usually how the system works. they try to define your problem, then they help you fix it.
if they mis-diagnose you, you will be mis-treated. all treatment is chosen based on the dx.
so if help is necessary it would really be best to get the right dx. otherwise you at least lose a lot of time and money. worst situation, you get traumatized by wrong treatment.
the benefit of a right dx is that it sets us up for success when it comes to treatment.

not all treatment helps. it would be folly to just tell people all the great benefits of treatment without defining what kind of treatment by whom etc.
but if everything happens as it should, you would find someone who can help with your problems. it won't matter if you and the people around you don't think that you have a problem. but if you do, there could be someone who actually knows some theory about the roots of that problem and who could guide you on the path how you can solve it.

we got treatment for cPTSD for a long time and it helped some of the symptoms but it was not enough to give us a stable life. too much untreated DID to even continue with PTSD treatment. it is only since we work with DID specialists that we see great positive changes for the system and individual parts.
to me it is a no-brainer. get the right dx to get the right treatment and find the right help.
unless of course you want everything to stay the way it is. change is difficult. It is a valid option not to want it. but there are usually consequences connected to that too. and in some systems, change will happen, if they want it or not. it is tricky to navigate.

I agree with birdsong to some extent, but there are categories of diagnoses, and as long as you're seen as having the category that fits you, I don't think the specific diagnosis in that category really matters for getting effective treatment.

I knew I had a dissociative disorder of some kind--a lot of DP/DR in my life, but I was sure I didn't have DID. I went to a dissociative disorders specialist, and he began treating me. There wasn't really a step of getting "diagnosed" and THEN getting treatment.

But I know it's different in different countries. I just went privately to a therapist with goals of things that I wanted to change and we started working together.
