Just an FYI

Postby Rive » Thu Jul 25, 2019 3:02 pm

So I got the book Got Parts? a couple of months ago. My therapist suggested it. In the back is a letter you can pull out and make copies of. It states that you have a Dissociative Disorder, tells the doctors a little about what to do if you dissociate and you can and your therapists number. AllCoulors thread made me think about this but I wanted everyone to see it. It may be helpful.

There are also credit card size cards available. Keep one in my wallet with medical info.

Dnester,
Got mine thru PODS (positive outcomes for dissociative survivors). PODS-online.org. Email.. info@pods-online.org.uk.
On one side is DID Emergency Information - How to Help. On the other, Information on DID - For Health Professionals. I attach a current calling card with T's office & direct phone numbers.

That advice is ok, but we found that book to be, in general, awful. The "if all parts don't know or won't share... then they can't be allowed to be in a safe place" kinda crap really irked some of us. EVERYONE deserves to feel safe, and being excluded for NOT KNOWING or scared to share is destructive.

The card thingy ISN'T a bad idea- the life "timeline" thingy isn't either... but a lot of that book is very... controversial and conflict-causing. There are better books out there.

Really, Pixie? The book says not allowed to be safe if not cooperative? Mine wouldn't cooperate until they felt safe..at my T's, with my T. They put him thru a trial of fire to see if he was. Can't imagine a scared one being willing to share & help the system otherwise. Shoot some of mine had no concept of or experience with being safe. Perhaps just us.

Yeah we had the same impression of that book as Pixie. Some good ideas here and there, but way too demandy and and way too rigid about stuff.

It might be stuff that worked for the author, maybe, but we think it's bad that they say everyone has to do things in that really strict rigid way.

I dont care for the book myself either. I was just talking about the cards. Like Pixie said there is some useful information and some not. As far as not being allowed in the safe place. Havent read that part. Just been skimming it. My therapist has never mentioned anything along those lines. When she wants them to speak she tells me to tell them its not acceptable not to speak. They often say they dont want to or they just dont.

She's not exaggerating that. It literally read "each part MUST give..." (emphasis added) followed by a list of "essential" information, a definite age, when they first came to exist, how/why, name, etc. It literally says if they DON'T give this information they should NOT be allowed into the "dome" (the model they use for a "safe place" internally is a dome-like place for everyone to reside in). But yes, it LITERALLY says they can NOT be included in that safety without giving all that information.

It gives very demanding "advice" on how to basically push everyone into line, IMHO. It was very rigid, very aggressive, and honestly reminded me of the sort of command presence of military basic training... NOT a good way to start off with alters, many of whom could be scared, hurting, confused, not ABLE to provide all that information, etc.

It was very aggressive and exclusionary, almost hostile at times. Even _I_ felt uncomfortable with it, as the host and more or less "main" part of our system... and I can't even GET inside...
