Forgetting things you know

Postby SystemFlo » Tue Sep 11, 2018 6:41 pm

Simple question.. How is it with the rest of you, when forgetting stuff you normally do know. For example I worked for a year in a restaurant. I was the manager, and I did a lot of evening shifts, and was the last one in the house. So it was my duty to set the alarm on when I left. It needed a code, and it had been the same one the entire time I worked there. And then one night I am standing there, I'd need to leave, but I had no clue what the code is. That is just one example, but you got the point probably. Forgetting something you certainly do know, like it would be washed away from your mind.

Does this kind of forgetfulness seem to be symptom of parts, or some other amnesia thing in your experience?

I’m not saying it is or isn’t, but I’m a plain boring singleton (as far as I know) and have those issues from time to time to. Once or twice a year I’ll get to the work computer and not recall the username pattern (first 3 of last name+first 2 of first + 3 digit #). I’ve also mixed up the bar oil and gas tanks filling chainsaws. Something I’ve done hundreds of times and that have several visual indicators which is which. :?

For us, I think when we have those kinds of lapses, if there's other 'symptoms' going on at the same time, we'll be more likely to attribute it to DID stuff.

Eg. we go on bike rides every morning. We've had our bike for like 18 or 19 months now, riding it every day. One morning I went out on the usual ride, but I could feel a sort of impending anxiety/panic attack forming which usually means Arin is close to front, or possibly triggered. And at the same time, I forgot how to operate the bike's gear shifter and brakes. I also noticed our legs felt really weak and we were really shakey on the bike, but at least we didn't fall off or anything. I actually had to stop and stare at the shifter on the handlebars to figure out how it worked, and for the whole ride we had trouble. The next day, no Arin and no troubles remembering how the bike worked. :)

A more significant example would be our previous host was really talented with computers. Programmer, systems designer, all that stuff. She disappeared late last year, and V1 and me ended up taking over, but neither of us are as good at computers. We're just like slowly figuring stuff out that she could do without even thinking. So, not like a brief moment of forgetting something, but a skill that's important to our job has basically gone missing. It's not like it's entirely forgotten and gone forever, there's another part who seems to have the computer talent, but she doesn't front that much.

Yep, this is what I call a brain fart. I think everyone does it, though some are more prone to it than others. If you have a disorder then it's more often/severe. My brain is farting all of the time, constantly forgetting what I was doing, what I was thinking about, why I walked into the room, where I put my stuff, and occasionally forget stuff like my phone number. And then there is the stuff that doesn't happen to normal people, like losing your skills like V2 descibed.

Was standing in line at the store once and complétely panicked because I had no clue as to what the code of my bank account pass was. Used that thing for three years, entered the code a million times without thinking, and it was just gone. It didn't came back either, had to ask for a new pass. Sometimes completely forget how to spell/use words which is very frustrating because that's the only thing I have to express stuff. And, yeah, passwords... not even going there:) Some parts know how to play certain instruments, others don't, some know English, others don't, some know the birth language, others don't, etc; it's very 'seperate' in here. And therefore confusing (and frightening) loads of times.

yup. knowledge, skills, and abilities come and go. it can be embarrassing.

I remember being on a lake vacation and took a boat ride with some folks. at first I had all my watercraft skills. could tie nautical knots. everything. we pulled up to the marina to get gas, dude I had just met tossed me the rope and I had ne'er a ######6 clue how to tie it up. it was so embarrassing. I presented as very skilled and two hours later I was an idiot. the look on his face.....

that's why most of us have crazy tricks for keeping up with life.
