I just have some questions.

Thwre may be some threads about this already but if there are they aren't recent so I decided to start my own.
I don't have DID myself but I'm in a lot of roleplaying communities, and DID is often given to people's ocs and grossly misrepresented. I'd like to learn more about the disorder and definitely have been by reading some of the threads here but there is one specific question that I didn't find an answer to.
As far as I know (I'm clearly no expert, this is just what I've gathered) there's sort of this inner world so to speak, where alters can interact. One or several alters can front/co-front the body. The one thing that I'm having difficulty understanding is how sometimes it seems like all the alters are "awake" at once so to speak, but sometimes the host will "wake up" and have no idea what they've done. I guess I just want a little clarification on how that works, if that makes sense.

Well that's how it goes. All parts come and go. If there are many in the body or some other way co-conscious at the same time, they'll remember what happened in outside world at that time. If they are not there, they don't remember, like you can't remember things if you weren't there when it happened. Because they all come and go, sometimes there are many and sometimes just one.

If you meant to ask why is that, I'm not sure. There can be something that triggers someone out or someone inside. Or maybe there is no triggers, they are just living their everyday life.

Not sure either if I understood what you meant. You were right with what you said, that's how it goes. If you meant why people sometimes know what happened when someone else fronted and sometimes don't, it's just that if they have been there still hanging on, even if they couldn't control the body, they will remember. If they've been completely gone, they won't.

Also, "host" is just the name often used for the alter that fronts the most often and handles a lot of the daily life of the system. If there's a big dissociative barrier between two alters, than when one of them is out front, the other one won't be aware of what the body is doing.

Most of the multiple people don't always have controle on "staying awake". Most of the time, we can't really choose to stay awake. It happen (or don't happen).

I think it's a matter of communication and connection to the part who front (but as we work as an OSDD system since the age of 10, so we don't switch, I'm not sure).
If I understand the thing well, if there is enough connection between the one who front and the ones who are inside, alters inside will not black out. If there's not, they will.
As each alters have a different level of connection with each other, not everyone can black out at once. And the host is not the only one who can "pop up", every other alters can too.
