Dissociative identity disorder and fiction *trigger warning*

Postby ElKahn » Sun Nov 30, 2014 10:34 pm

I have never seen stuff like Sybil or the Three Faces of Eve, but I watched a horror/thriller movie called Session 9, which is about a group of asbestos removers working in the now demolished Danvers State Asylum in Massachusetts. One of them finds a tape of a patient with DID.

I find this part pretty accurate, except for the last part of the tape where the man speaks.
Here's the tape in the movie, but don't listen to it if it can trigger switches you don't want or something like that:

The only fictional part is Simon, the male voice. That was made for the movie, and he probably represents evil instead of representing an alter. Or a demon, maybe.

What movies have you watched that make an accurate or more or less accurate portrait of dissociative identity disorder?

we watched session 9 a while ago on netflix without even knowing it was going to be about DID (cuz i got a lil obsession with horror movies lmao) but when we got about half way in we could just KNEW the main dude was split like we could just tell. imo it was a pretty awesome movie in terms of being a cool movie as well as being as accurate as you can get making a hollywood adaptation of DID.
another good movie we watched, again cuz i love horror movies, and again without knowing it was about DID, was one called "The Ward" which we also watched on netflix. [[BRIEF MOVIE SYNOPSIS, POSSIBLY TRIGGERING, ALSO SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO MIGHT WATCH IT]] it was about a woman who found setting this old building on fire and she cant remember anything about herself and blah blah blah she goes to a psych hospital blah blah there's a scary ghost thing that keeps killing women in the hospital blah blah blah she makes friends with the other women to try and escape or kill the ghost or something like that i dont remember that part too well blah blah blah SHE'S ACTUALLY DID!!! turns out the ghost thing was an alter manifesting her trauma and the other women in the hospital were her alters and they worked together to face the trauma and were able to function together as a system now!!! woman's parents come to the hospital and speak to her doctors where they are all supportive and helpful and it was just generally a really awesome inspiring movie albeit totally unrealistic but at least it tried lmao [[END TW AND SPOILER WARNING]]

Aside from that movie, there's a couple other instances of multiples in fiction. I was watching House. M.D. the other day and they we're treating a young girl who was pregnant although she insisted she had never had sex. House intimidated her, asking where her boyfriend was, why she was lying about being a virgin, ect. ect. when all of sudden the girl switched, her face changed, her voice dropped, it was a perfect characterization of a switch and she said "I'm right here" (as in, her boyfriend was an alter.)[[MILD TW]] It turned out she had been in a horrible car accident at a young age where her father had died and it caused her to split. [[END TW]]

and i've seen a few bits in some anime we've watched!!! like 'akuma no riddle', 'dangan ronpa', 'tokyo ghoul' all had split characters and there was a vocaloid song about multiplicity as well! i think ppl who arent muliple dont catch it as easily but we seem to be able to find at least one obviously multie character in everything!

Hi you all,

There is another post, that I know about, that also talk about fictional portrayals of DID:

What is the most realistic portrayal of DID? ***Trigger***

Just to enrich the conversation.

I guess there's yet another, about books maybe, but don't remember it quite well right now.

Humm... Logan, did you like The Ward? I think I didn't quite believe her the act, nor the movie. We saw it with friends this Halloween.

Lizzy, I find myself also catching multie characters in many things I see. It's cool, though.

Cool! Clair thank you!

I did see your post and put them on my watch later list. And also want to read a couple of books, though I haven't found them online: Set this house in order. And well, the classics, When the rabbit howls, and A fractured Mind.

Hey, say hi to Elissa and Tommy for me please.

I'm not certain about movies.. I've never seen an accurate representation.
One book I know of is 'I never promised you a rose garden' by Hannah Green.
Several Anime also have DID characters, but it doesn't often seem to be very accurate, or in depth. One that I can recommend, which has a slight DID theme, is Monster.
Lastly, the game Beyond two souls, is about someone who has a 'companion', though it's far mroe real than any alter could be. Still, i enjoyed the game immensely, and many themes in it were recognisable.
Hiki -original and host, female, 28-
Yuki -protective/teen, female, exat age unknown-
Marvolo -main protector, male, 94-
