is DID have related wih nervous system?

Postby WeirdMan » Wed Oct 18, 2006 3:39 pm

As long as I know, some alter may have physical problems such as deaf or kind of that. So, is it related with the nervous system?

Through scans and such they can see a different blood-pressure and different brain-waves when there's an(other) alter, so I suppose it is somewhat. We have had occurences in which one of us was sneezing all the time, but no alter ever sneezed. And you have cases of persons who are in wheel-chairs and suddenly stand up and start walking when an alter comes out. But I don't know how it relates to deaf, blind or immobile alters, whether that's tracable through the nervous system or not.

No, not really. It really can't be explained medically. Its all on the alter. When an alter is out, its an entirely different person. More or less its actually all in the mind. They're not really deaf or blind or whatever, but in their mind they've convinced themselves into these conditions. Its the whole idea if you truly believe in something strong enough, it can happen. Except fly or something, I don't know, never met anyone who truly believed they could fly. And yes it is possible to get them to realize this through some wicked therapy.

i've heard of one way which pretty much hits the nail on the head:

Somatoform disorders are physical problems such as temporary deafness, leg cramps, migraines, selective abdominal pain, but physical problems which are not related to any physical disease. For instance, someone with no real back problems could suffer temporary back spasm attacks, or someone with perfect vision could occasionally ebcome blind. Basically a somatoform disorder is a pain or problem that cannot be explained medically.

theres been a recent study that shows that somatoform disorders are linked to DID. it kinda makes perfect sense when ya think about teh fact we have alters ^_^
but yeah, it's not really connected with the nervous system (although the nervous system could become affected somatically) it's more to do with the mental process involved which creates a somatic state for each alter

....random
XD

Right now, as you read this, does it amount to anything more than a collection of thoughts and memories which are just transitory, and come and go in the mind like clouds in the sky? --

To add to the affects that alters can have on the body... alters can take on doses of drugs; for example I went into the hospital on an overdose of prescription drugs, but because 2 different alters had taken a "normal" dose of the medicine seperately my drug levels were fine. I wasn't affected. Not a nervous system symptom, but interesting medical fact...

Harri, Thanks for the book recommendation, I will look into that. I have pretty much every book I could find on DID. But thats a branch I have not explored yet.
So what is the "me"?
My brain I suppose.
Because I have sort of a voice in my head, the part of me that thinks, that feels, that is aware that I exist at all.
