Sleep Disturbance or Alter? *trigger warning*

Postby Violarules » Sat Jul 05, 2014 2:25 am

Hi all. I've posted a few threads here before but haven't been active due to school and stressful life stuff. I haven't been diagnosed with DID and don't know if I will be but I thought I'd get an opinion on this. I put a trigger warning on this just in case.

****TRIGGER WARNING****
Anyway, I was wondering if a recent event I've been having is a sign of an alter or just a sleep disturbance? So this started about a week ago, my brother would come into my room to talk to me because he couldn't sleep and told me that he would have a full conversation with me. When he would bring up the conversation the next day, I would have no memory of the conversation. I thought I was sleep talking until he told me that I opened my eyes and looked at him, seeming completely awake and alert. He started recording me when he would come in to talk to me and I listened to them and I would answer him in sentences and the responses sounded like answers I would give if I was awake at the time. He even asked me if I was sleep talking and I responded, "No." What was interesting is in the most recent one, I asked him a question. I asked him, "Did you record me last night?" My brother responded no and I reacted like I was disappointed. He then asked if I wanted him to record and I said yes. This was interesting because in an earlier recording, I became annoyed from him recording me and told him to delete the recording. There were also a few times where he didn't record because he thought I was awake, even sitting up one time and giving him a hug good night another time in the exact way I would hug him if I was awake. I saw my doctor a few days ago and he suspects it could be a sleep disorder (from this and other factors but after I got home from my doctor's appointment I realized I'd left out a lot of things I wanted to talk about with him. He referred me to a neurologist to get an EEG and I need to make that appointment) but what do you all think? Is it a sleep disorder or an alter that becomes active at night to cover for me when my brother comes in to talk to me?

****END OF TRIGGER WARNING****

Another encounter I had last night was my brother came in to ask me what something in a Facebook status I made meant. I answered him and then I blacked out , maybe from exhaustion since it was late and the fireworks from one of my neighbors was keeping me up but my brother said he had a conversation with me and asked me if I wanted my fan on which I told him yes. When he turned the fan off, I then told him to turn it off but he just turned it down. He then asked me for a good night hug but told me he had to ask more than once since it seemed like I had fallen asleep. I then became conscious during the last time he asked me for a hug, gave him one and then he left the room. So I remember the very beginning and very end but no memory of what happened in between that except what my brother told me happened.

Loss of time is a symptom of DID. I would certainly follow through with EEG, as seizure disorder is diferential diagnosis.

********Trigger Warning*********

my personal alarm goes off with mention of your brother, hugs at night, memory loss - what happened before he left the room -ugh. I"m so sorry - I may be completely off base here and mean no offense. This may be related to my personal issues.

No offense taken forever21. Thank you for the response. I have my EEG scheduled in two days and I'll see what happens. Something else I didn't mention is the first night this happened, I woke up after he left the room and he was struggling to close my door since the door has to be forced shut or it just opens but I didn't realize it was him since he'd already closed the door. Also, some of the answers I give aren't truth. Like my brother asked me if I had heard of an old show called Taxicab Confessions and I responded yes just to tell him the next day when he brought it up that I'd never heard of it. It's interesting that I don't always tell the truth but seem to give the answer the person wants to hear. At least, that's how I've interpreted it.

Does this only happen around your brother or happen more frequently around your brother?

Side note - I just had a debate with my fiance ..he says I say i hate cheese, but i put cheese on everything. i became offended at his suggstion I put cheese on everything and said, hey back up! I don't like cheese! I also don't like Pizza, but apparently a part of me does, since I ate 4-5 slices the other day and posted about it here. I said i wanted to perform a song...rehearse it etc...then i changed my mind and my fiancee didn't understand the 180...but that's sort of the nature of DID. My parts have different memories, different tastes in food, tastes in music, clothes. They seem to be as different as any two physically distinct individuals.

I can see how you may be wondering if you have DID. If possible, consult with someone who specializes in DID. Otherwise, it's possible you may be disappointed in your response from the psychiatric community. Good luck with that and your EEG.

I've only noticed it around my brother. I also have 180s like that where I like something one minute and then become uninterested with it. Like I can find a game online that I really like and then a few months later not want to play it anymore. My interests change all the time and out of the blue. I also remember once that I was in English class and we were reading a play and the teacher wanted us to act it out. It's something we had done before in class but for some reason, I felt overly excited about it, kinda like a kid that experiences something that they really like. It was so out of character that people asked me why I reacted like that but it also caused me to completely miss an important piece of information at the end of the class where we were supposed to take a poem home, analyze it and then bring it with us to a quiz which I don't remember the teacher telling the class. There have also been times where I start crying for no reason or become angry for no reason that I can understand. I hope the EEG tomorrow clears up some things.

Update: I did not have the EEG for some reason but the doctor is going to schedule a sleep test to see if it's a sleep disorder.

Also, to add, I told my mom about my appointment and that if needed, I would be administered a medication to help suppress the voices and hallucinations and she started going into how medication can negatively impact someone. I have a tendency to worry about things and now I'm worried about that and I have a headache from it but I just can't calm down.

Hope the appointment goes well! Medication can have some unpleasant side effects, but usually your doctor will work with you on medication type and dosage to minimize any of the side effects while maximizing effectiveness.

Good luck! We're here for you through all of this!
