DID and school

Postby UsSally » Tue Apr 29, 2014 8:55 pm

Can we get some advice on switching in class? We start switching a lot at the end of the school day. And that makes one of us unable to concertrate on the taks and teachers. As switching takes a few minutes for us the ones switching lose quite a lot in class. Teachers get mad too bc they think we (I in their point of view) are daydreaming. We can’t really tell them what is going on either. None of us has told anyone. And this should remain a secret until I say it is OK to tell.

Sure. You can take steps to reduce or stop the switching. And you can take steps to function better despite the switching.

Here are some things you can do to reduce or stop the switching. Get a better quality of sleep at night. Eat lunch. Do grounding exercises before (between) the afternoon classes. Find out why you are switching. Make behavioral contracts with the alters involved in switching. Sit in a different chair.

Here are some things you can do to function better despite switching. Buy an inexpensive digital voice recorder and use it to record all your afternoon classes, every day. Later on listen to the recordings to hear what you missed. In some places this may be illegal unless you get permission from someone. Discuss this with your school counselor to start. Do you have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or similar? Even without disclosing a formal diagnosis, you can get an IEP because you are having trouble learning. Recording your classes is a common accommodation that can be authorized under an IEP.

Thanks Una+. We'll try the deal making first. And no, there isn't a counselor at our school. We go to a small school with 7 students. Will be going to a big school in a few years. But if the deal with others don't work ('cuz Val is usually the one switching at the end of school days, she is kind of a stereotypical teenage girl) we'll try to talk to family or so. Thanks again.

I recommend perhaps a different school. Is this a special ed school? I ask because I you said that only 7 students go.

Being in an environment where the teacher doesn't understand your condition can be toxic. Its important they understand your needs rather than see them as an intention to avoid work or being lazy. In cases like this they often just start to treat you poorly, which is wrong, but then again they just don't understand disabilities.

Have you spoken to a T about this?

Hey, Riccola. Haven't talked to a T about this. But the last time Kat (original) went to one he said she was fine. She felt like 55 euros was spent on nothing. After becoming aware of each other no, she (or us) hasn't. There are 7 students bc we live on an island wih 50 people :) . Will finish this school in a few years. It isn't that teachers don't understand. It's more like we haven't told anyone. Kats mom (I view her more like a house mate :) ) thinks that 'having many people in one body' is impossible. And I don't wanna start telling people about everyone before Kat comes back (missing at the moment). Guess we'll think of something. I got Alex to talk to others about not disdurbing whoever is in school. I and Alex will also make a list of things everyone has to take care of while Kat is gone.

Ok good to know! :) I think it would help telling your teacher at least part of it, that your struggling. Im sure the teacher will understand that you are putting your best in all this and your trying hard to learn.

I hear yahh. Not every T clicks with the person and not every alter bleives its needed. The fact you are working a plan out together within the system is great. Sounds like stability is taking place. The list is a good start with you an Alex.

I wish you the best. :)
