Difference between identities and personality states? (DSM)

Postby ZeekB » Mon Mar 24, 2014 4:59 am

Can someone help e with this one?

I've seen a lot of people talking about alters with diferent ages, genders, rolls, history, etc. But mine doesn't exactly change that much, same age, same gender but no personal history that I know of; besides I only have one.

My doctor only speaks about personality fragmentation, but some other doctors I saw in a mental health hospital diagnosed me with "Dissociative Fugue", claiming that I have dissociative episodes trying to get rid of stressful moments, my therapist says no matter what name you put on it, it's no other than a personality division.

What I believe from what I read is that I don't have this kind of identities, but personality states switches, however I'm sort of confused.

Any clues?
Thanks.

I am not sure. What you describe sounds a lot like what I've been dealing with. Not the fugue part but the different states. I have written about this in a thread I started. I added more and more throughout the thread. I don't know if it will help at all but it might be similar to what you're going through? Here it is if OK. You are not alone. Supporting you 100%. dissociative-identity/topic135233.html

In DSM-5, published 2013, dissociative fugue is downgraded from a disorder to a symptom: it is a rare symptom in Dissociative Amnesia and a common symptom in Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Almost everyone who is observed to experience more than one dissociative fugue has DID. Apparently the hospital staff observed you in one or more fugues. It is common for someone who has fugues to be unaware of them. As we often say here on the DID Forum, it is common for us to have amnesia for our amnesia. At least, until we get into therapy and begin to be able to remember.

ZeekB, you are in therapy with someone who talks with you about personality fragmentation. That sounds good. You have an aware therapist!
