AA and DID

Postby nothingelsematters » Sat Nov 09, 2013 9:02 pm

This is Tyler. Does anyone have any experience of being in AA and actually "coming out" as a multiple? I want Jen to go but she won't go back. She says if I go she won't listen. She's the one everyone "knows." II'm pretty sick of people not seeing me for who I am. I'm WAY cooler than Jen. Anyways, she needs to get her butt to a meeting. Her drinking is killing all of us. :( tyler

Hi Tyler,
I've been going to AA for the last year. I told them I have DID but nobody really got it. I learned that most of the AA community is there to talk about alcoholism and mental health issues are not discussed in a meeting. I was able to find a sponsor who understands and works with me as a multiple person.

I also learned that my recovery from child sexual abuse is different from my recovery from drugs and alcohol even though some of the suggestions overlap and are helpful. I bring everything that is said to me to my T and she helps me relate it to DID. I have to modify "the program" to fit DID.

Some people in AA are very rigid and do not agree with me doing this. For example, they say that being angry with someone means there is something about yourself that caused the problen. This is not the case for someone who has been abused.

Aroara is my alter who drinks, we made it 60 days once without drinking but today we are back to just 3 days because she refuses to go. She says it is scary and confusing. We are very patient with her.

My advice is to find a sponsor who understands dissociation or is willing to. And please talk and ask me anything. It will be helpful for me as well.

Good luck
