Books about DID?

Postby XommZ » Mon Sep 23, 2013 9:50 pm

I can't find any books about coping with and/or controlling DID anywhere... please can someone point me in a direction??? (i'm 15 and my mum won't let me buy a book online because she's in denial about me having DID in the first place... ~.~) sorry about any trouble and thanks in advance :P

mute/protector(?): dubbed Luke, main reason for my belief that I have DID.

I don't actually know whether I want DID or not... I'd always have someone to talk to, but it would probably ruin my future career... Meh, who needs money?

On my "to read" list is:

Got parts by A.T.W.
I am more than one by Jane Wegscheider Hyman)
The silver boat II by Ann Adams

The first two you would be able to get through a library many places.

The Dissociative Identity Disorder by sourcebook by Deborah Bray Haddock, M.Ed., M.A., L.P. and foreword by James A. Chu, M.D.

That book explains DID well, and has tips for people who have it as well as people who know someone who has it. It's a good book.

Per suggestions here we purchased the ebook for " got parts" - bout read it in one sitting except that was doing my head in but I did skim the whole thing. I like it a lot except for the part about a part out need to say who it is... We still really are vague and it's soupy about know who is out ( I think it's because we are partially integrated/integrating or perhaps we just don't know?) . The best part (ha) of the "got parts" book (for us) is the drawings and maps. We did ours slightly different but last night we did the create your own internal safe place map. It's a. drawing where you create safe places and meeting spots and what not. The results of this exercise for us were amazing!! We drew a place for main alter groups, a meeting place and a processing grief area. Upon inspection we saw there were no gates between super functional parts and the emotional parts?!! And the wall I had quickly, rather mindlessly drawn had very thick walls between functional parts and the emotional parts. I just love journaling in the form of drawing because it reveals so much to us!!! Anyway all this to say that these DID books in combination with drawing maps and pictures is very helpful. Thanks for all of the book recommendations :) best of luck to the OP.

Re: Books about DID?

After reading this thread I ordered the DID Sourcebook, and Got Parts. I would recommend both although I personally prefer the Sourcebook as it appeals more to my intellectual side since it has more of a textbook feel and doesn't feel as informal as the other. The DID Sourcebook is matter of fact and while Got Parts has great advice and information on a personal day to day basis, for me it was a little too 'chummy'. My SO prefers Got Parts, though, so I think it's a matter of personal preference.

Just ordered the Silver Boat for my daughter on recommendation from lifelongthing. Thanks again. Found it was expensive even in the used section on amazon; I don't know if that's due to rarity or availability in the UK but I feel it's a necessity despite price.

It's due to availability :) I hope you find it to be as good as we've found it.
