cause of DID?

Postby Nina11 » Tue Jul 09, 2013 5:56 pm

I read in one of the articles I found on here that one assumed in the past that the personality split up into other parts.

But that current theories state that there never was a whole personality and that the mind was never one.

However, I m readin up in 'The Haunted Self', where they state that, in adults, further fragmentation can occur causin 'the personality to split up more'.

So, are both true? Is there a fragmentation from the start that can continue to fragment, or am I missing the point?

*possible trigger warning attachment*
I did a bit research on attachment disorder and the development of DID. It seems that a disorganized/ disorientated attachment disorder and traumatical experiences can contribute to DID (in fact disorganized/ disorientated attachment disorder counts as early trauma itself).
I think that an attachment disorder (especially disorganized/disorientated) interferes with the development of a whole personality.
And I do think, that fragments can get traumatized as well and split even more (I experienced this: one alter (the dancer) is in itself two different personalities, has a sort of bipolar dynamic).

It does appear that both are true. It is hard to know what goes on in the mind of a preverbal infant, but it does appear that infants have separate, dissociated ego states; that they lack an integrated consciousness; that integration comes later. The idea is that in DID the normal integration of ego states fails to occur at the usual time in early childhood. On the other hand, it is well documented that people with DID can (and many of us do) fully integrate later in life. For this reason DID may be seen as a developmental delay.

That said, it is true that new alters can form in adulthood. One of my alters is an example of this. My DID is not new; only this alter is new.

I agree with all that Una says here. She is spot on.

However, Kluft reports that the alters already exist in the inner world and then are put into action, so to say, as needed. This actually makes sense to me and my experience.

(Note: In all humans, EP's can be made throughout life. This is a whole other story.)

This is from the T & D wiki's terminology page:
In Dissociative Identity Disorder The part of the personality that will take the abuse already exist in the child's inner world (see inner world). Therefore what occurs is an ongoing separation of parts, rather than a "split or fracture" of one part from another. [2]:87-88 The term "splitting or fractured" used when describing Dissociative Identity Disorder is a misnomer. For example: a child on the ceiling watching a trauma, has not "split off" from the part of the personality that is enduring trauma, however the individual might develop Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In Dissociative Identity Disorder a long history of chronic abuse is present as well as disorganized attachment. [1]:302-306

well, as for one, I thought Rob popped up just recently, but as I heard him talk to Rebecca he seemed to know her very well for just bein around, then I found out he shared memories of things that happened years and years ago, so who knows how long he s been there?
Never heard a peep of him all these past years til like recently.

So, instead of bein new, he turned out to be there all along.

It s a question I m lookin into too.

I went back to edit and it was too late. Let me add that this is the part of Una's statement that I am in agreement with. I don't want to confuse anyone. :D

it does appear that infants have separate, dissociated ego states; that they lack an integrated consciousness; that integration comes later. The idea is that in DID the normal integration of ego states fails to occur at the usual time in early childhood.
