'I Like What I Like So There'

It's not a movie, but it is an anime in which the two main characters have split personalities. It is a yoai anime, just in case you're not into that kind of stuff.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006). A man begins to hear a voice commenting on his life, as if narrating a story in which he is the main character. Little did he know . . . This film adapts in a marvelous way the multiple's subjective reality of hearing a voice, the voice of a stranger who somehow knows all about you and has an uncanny and frankly terrifying power to direct your life.

Ooh, interesting. Until I was about 12, I heard a narrator narrating life (in third person) as it was happening, all the time or almost all the time, as if I were a character in a book. (I read constantly, so I guess that kind of thing came naturally.)

Still thinking about Stranger Than Fiction. What a wonderful adaptation of the whole DID "awakening" experience. After consulting a psychiatrist to no avail the man hearing voices consults a university professor who conducts an incisive differential diagnosis. If only we all could work with such an expert diagnostician early in our course of treatment!

Also known as Sukisho, or Sukisyo. If I had to write a review, at first I'd say it's a good depiction of DID ... but then many elements are played for laughs. However, the main characters have DID, as a result of trauma, which shows the authors did some research. It also deals with self-discovery, and the struggle that comes with it on the path to acceptance. In episode 1, 2 or 3 (I've watched this many years ago), I think the show attempts to depict a trigger leading to dissociative psychosis (I think ... I don't know enough about DID to tell confidently if it is the case), and it is not that successful at displaying the trigger. However, in the last episode, the main antagonist exploits a trigger (fire, in occurence) on one of the main characters, but the main character in question resists successfully. Finally, I think it tries to depict integration and healing at the end, but I'm not sure and my memories are too fuzzy to be able to tell confidently.

I've watched this a long time ago, long before I became aware I had DID. My memories are a bit fuzzy, but I somehow don't think I'd be able to watch it now. I tried to figure which of the three episodes it was but I can't bring myself to watch them, I feel ... blocked ... somehow.

I've watched the YouTube video of Stranger than fiction where the psychiatrist tells him its schizophrenia, and it reminded so much of my own story I couldn't help but smile. I was fortunate enough to request access to a psychologist (which has qualifications in dissociation, how lucky!) and to him it was pretty clear that I was dissociative in a way or another, but that I was not schizophrenic.
