New to the forum and overwhelmed. I'd really appreciate some input. The bottom-line question I have is: can denial of one's identity be considered an indicator of DID?
I have read that DID is characterized by 2 or more distinct personalities, each with their own mannerisms, behaviors, etc and each taking over at a certain point. That's where I get hung up - what if someone has flat out denied their identity (name, birthday, life events, just...entire existence, really) and claims a new one? It's not a power struggle. It's not Ben vs. Rob. It's "Ben is a lie. I am actually Rob and this is my life's story and who I am and what made me. Everyone who calls me Ben is in denial or lying. I have never been Ben and I don't know where that came from, nor do I recall the memories that others have of Ben, because I am and always have been Rob."
There is no switch of personalities/identities from Ben to Rob. It's Rob claiming to be Rob and everyone else telling him he's Ben. Rob uses the name Ben around those people and avoid confrontation.
What am I dealing with here? Thanks for reading.
