hearing things before you go to bed

Postby patm3300 » Mon Dec 19, 2005 6:02 pm

right before i go to bed i usually start hearing voices in my head. sometimes it is my old neighbors. i am wondering if this has something to do with my depression developing psychotic features. for example one time right before i went to bed some guy said "are you depressed" and them one of my old neighbors said "not really" and then another one said "no". sometimes i hear my dad rambling on about something. i wonder if i am developing psychotic features with my depression. is this normal with depression?

It happens to me too!!! One day before going to bed I listen a woman complaning about something and then I heard someone crying and I was listening a lot of conversations. Sometimes I heard familiar voices, sometimes I don't. It doesn't happen all the time but what scares me the most is that it happens.

hearing/seeing things beforeyou go to sleep happens to a lot of people. It's a phenomena called hypnagogic hallucinations... i get them all the time, and i used ot be scared of htem too, but I did reserach and found out that it happens to like 35-40% of the population... it's actually pretty cool 'cuase not everyone gets to experience them, and they can be good for creativity,I've gotten alot of ideas from them.... if you read up on Mary Shelley, she got the idea of Frankenstein from a hypnagogic hallucination.....
hope i helped

yes i get a lot of hypnagogic hallucinations but i think that this voices are something else because they occur while i am lying dormantly in bed... not just when you are in stage 1 sleep like when hypagogics occur.
