question about drinking while on meds

Postby bill009 » Tue Nov 29, 2005 12:24 am

Im taking risperdal and prozac for psychosis and depression and I was told I'm not suppossed to drink while taking these meds. Does anybody know what will happen if I decide to drink anyway? Im dying for some alchohol and its pissing me off that I've been without one for about 4 months now. Do you think the side effects would be serious like I would die or something?

I don't know if you can die or not.....don't know your dosage....don't know how much you'd drink...you really need to pose this question to your dr. prescribing your meds......

however.....I've had alchohol while on meds....it REALLY messed me up......I got drunk a lot faster for starters....but I guess ask yourself this......why are you taking the meds? You want to get better I'm assuming. When you drink along w/ your meds.....the effects...you might as well not take the meds. Basically when I did this....all the symptoms I was taking meds for came back hard and way more intensified then when I was not drinking and when I was off meds.

Sorry...I don't have this text book concrete answer....I just know how it messed me up when I tried. I'm no longer on meds now and I've not drank in 2 years. Doing WAY better.

hey ###$ yeah! your case souns just like mine, browse this forum for my posts you might find that we have alot in common, um yeha to adress your question when i was on ris, and prozac, all it did was make me extremely drowsy, i was drunk after two bitch smirnoffs, so you'll be fine, just have somplace to lay down, and f you smoke weed, it'll only not make you as high but it won't do nothing else bad, at leats that was my experiance
somtimes, it's like i want to touch these lights, and give into them become them, just a flash for a moment~in this world

wow...you got something from that?!!! my thoughts were so scattered the day I posted....I was going on 3 hrs. sleep in 2 days!!

What I wanted you to think about is the idea that drinking alcohol alters what your meds can do for you. I say ask yourself what you want for yourself and why you take the meds? To combat or help tone down certain symptoms you suffer from right?! Well....if you drink...it's going to alter (negatively) the affects of your meds. So then you are paying for and taking meds that are no longer effective to your needs.

Adverse reactions? Well....here I'm not qualified to say. Here I urge you to talk w/ your doctor about what meds you are currently on and what the effects of any amount of drinking it can have.

I remember a few years ago I was taking topamax and busperine. (did I spell that right?) Anyway. I didn't realize the latter of my two meds is used for MANY things. I was at awedding and decided to have a "glass" of beer. Not sure if it even amounted to a full can.....I had not quite all of the beer. W/in a couple hours of drinking that I had this HUGE headache. I mean I felt like someone took a bat to my head. I knew right off it was my meds because my dr. encouraged me not to drink. But I figured that was mroe because it would make me really tired or get drunk faster or something. I rarely drink...so I didn't ask questions! Turns out my med is also used w/ people that have a problem w/ alcohol and are trying to get clean and sober. I dont' remember this explanation in full anymore but basically because of what the med does for someone in that situation....is why when I drank while on the med I wound up feeling so sick and dealing w/ that murder of a headache!

So yeah...talk w/ your dr. Each med and any given dose for each med....it all depends on how much you drink.....as you can see in my case....I didn't have to drink much at all. While on topamax I would get very tipsy and dizzy after only a half of a wine cooler! Not for some....that might be kind of neat! for me...it sucked! Well and as I was saying earlier....it also drastically decreased the effects of my meds as well as intensified the sypmtoms I dealt w/ that I was trying to combat. Make sense?

Talk w/ your dr. Be honest about what you have in mind for drinking. Are you thinking about juts having one or two drinks every now and again or are you thinking of being able to go out on the weekends and just go at it and get drunk?! (or whatever)....find out how it will affect the meds working for you and find out what side affects you can encounter that could be harmful to you in ways outside of your mental health concerns.

Good Luck!

I drank alcohol with my meds. I lived through it, but I think it gave me some extra brain damage. I wish I had those brain cells that I killed. I went to AA and it controls my alcoholism and my mental illness.
