sleep deprivation helps relieve depression; i will try it

Postby nerdboy » Sun Oct 30, 2005 4:21 am

hello i am 15 years old and i have been diagonsed with clinical depression. i am feeling very anxious and down right now (even more than i always do) and i recently learned that sleep deprivation can help you to feel better. it was a technique used in the 1950's by psychiatrists, but it was abandoned after antidepressants were made. now it is making a comeback. i think that many people who visit these forums should try this. first i would like you people wait for me to try it and i will say if i like it or not. I WILL REPORT BACK EVERY SINGLE DAY WITHOUT SLEEP AND TELL YOU HOW I AM FEELING. i think that if i give good reports than you should seriously consider going without sleep yourself

Psychologists believe that this method works because sleep-deprivation takes you out of "your right mind" and can dramatically lighten up your mood in just one day without sleep. This is why it is commonly used for severly depressed or suicidal people before their anti depressants kick in

I would seriously not reccomend this, sleep deprivation is extremely un-healthy, both mentally and physically.

Heres a good Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_deprivation

And yes it has sometimes been used to treat mental disorders, but then again so has electroshock therapy. Doesnt mean its healthy

Not sleeping does seem to make depression go away, that is until you get some sleep. So you may be able to reduce depression for a day or so, but in the long run it will come back. The lack of sleep may bring on many other problems that may be worse. There are a number of ways to deal with depression including exercise, medication, and cognitive therapy. I would suggest you do some sort of aerobic exercise for an hour or so each day. That also has been shown to control depression and it carries with it many good side effects (unlike going without sleep).
Good Luck,

hahaha, o this post is funny nerdboy

sorry, i don't want to harm, just inform you of a little somthing, my diagnosis.....

major depression with psychotic features

woot!

how'd i get there?

well, partly, it was because of sleep deprivation.

at least three days out of the week, i'd stay up all night, to work on school work, and i put my depression aside, like i had for years, like i'm still doing, and then, the thoughts came. Suzy, she lived int he back of my head, and told me things, like how to kill myself, how to kill others, slamming my head into things, she thought these were good ideas:). yeah.....just a heads up, sleep makes you feel better right? and in my case, it's a nice escape from all the problem i have in life, and staying up and worryign about them just ###$ you up, so don't, you don't wnat psychotic features, and you don't wnat anti-psychotics to be the only way out, it's not fun, it dillutes your personality, and makes you fat, so just get some sleep, it's good for your mind.

For your own health, I suggest you not try this little not sleeping marathon. I can tell you right now it can be horribly bad for your own well-being

And let me tell you right now, the halucinations are NOT always fun

This is a bad and dangerous idea. Although sleep deprivation may provide a temporary euphoria, it renders you unable to carry on your daily life, and, as I assume you are in highschool, will completely take away your ability to in the least bit apply yourself to academics. There was a reason why it was abandoned in the fifties; it's because it is a dangerous and unproven substitution for anti-depressants.

I personaly know loseing some sleep keep's me calm, I'm not talking stay awake 24/7 that's definitely not healthy & I don't see it helping depression go away at all. The minimum requirement for sleep I think is 8 hours, I don't think it will help depression at all though but may be it can slightly help calm psychaotic thinking.
Recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, previous diagnosis was schizophrenia.

sleep deprivation in my experience does help with depression. It is bad if you are like me and schizophrenic because the hallucinations are sometimes very scary. I still believe it is good to deprive yourself of sleep ever so often.
