Could sleeping pills actually help with depression?

Postby treekat » Sat Mar 03, 2012 8:29 pm

I have depression, ADHD, and anxiety, and lately it feels like my anti-depressants (I'm on 300mg of Wellbutrin XL) aren't doing all that much for me since I have that general "blah" feeling a lot. 2 nights ago I only got 4 hours of sleep, so last night I took a sleeping pill (even though I was already sleepy) just to make sure I slept well. I took 25mg of Trazadone (which is a prescription sleeping pill that I have kicking around the house [It's not expired, so don't worry there]) and when I woke up today, I felt so much more alert, awake, HAPPY, and energized! I never feel happy and awake when I wake up in the mornings. It was an amazing feeling. Since then, my happiness has been continuing throughout the day, even though that original boost of energy has seemed to wear off. I've wondered if I am on too strong of a dosage of wellbutrin, but since that sleeping pill, I am now also wondering if I am depressed because I get horrible sleep every night.... Any ideas..?
~It's just me and the little one inside of this body, but we love each other so much, and we know that we will be there for each other when we really need it.~

in my personal experience, Trazodone does WONDERS for me. sleeping through the night gives me so much more energy during the day that I would say it does help with that general exhausted lethargic "blah" feeling. plus, it is an antidepressant as well. I would suggest talking to your doctor about how much better it makes you feel and maybe start taking that every night. it should be safe to use with your wellbutrin, because i take trazodone every night and my doc wants to start me on wellbutrin soon. but definitely talk to your doctor before just starting to take it on a regular basis. in my opinion it's most definitely worth a shot!

I am irritable and depressed when I have had a poor night of sleep. When I finally do get a good night of sleep I always feel great waking up, like all is right in the world again. I usually have a productive and positive day. I take sleeping pills every night. In my case, sleeping pills don't help with depression per se but what they affect can. Without sleeping pills I would be a miserable wreck. I honestly don't have a clue how I would cope.

Getting enough sleep can help with depression.
I'm currently on 30mg of Remeron and it's supposed to cure insomnia as well as depression and PTSD. And when I get enough sleep during the nights, I feel less depressed in the mornings and less exhausted.

I have no experience with Trazadone, though. But I'd say getting enough sleep at night can definitely help the depression go away (and I think it helps the antidepressants work better, in my experience).
Dx. Schizophrenia
Rx. Stelazine 4mg, Invega 12mg, Vistaril PRN
Past Rx. Abilify 10mg, Risperdal 3mg, Celexa 10mg, Remeron 45mg, Seroquel 300mg
