Sleep has a great effect on my mood. However, sometimes I have good days when I have had a terrible time sleeping. Researchers have found that lack of sleep removes depression. However, the depression reappears when the person does get some sleep. This connection has been known for many years. However, it is not of much use for it only lasts for a day. But, it does comfort me to know that if I can't sleep, I may be happy the next day--happy, but tired.

Very interesting. I was unaware of this connection; however, as I reflect on my own experiences, it does appear to be mostly true for me. 8)

sleep

Postby mylifesucks » Mon Nov 21, 2005 7:29 am

well i'm taking psych courses right now, so i can tell you that less sleep does cause depression. that study that says that people feel better if they have less sleep - its true, but its very similar to bulemics. once bulemics starve themselves, they are thin for a while and they are happy. but when they get hungry, then they binge and the weight goes back up. sleep is the same, because no sane person can live on limited amounts of sleep per day (even though a lot of people come close). also, you might want to know that though lack of sleep reduces depression, it will eliminate things that could stop depression (friendships, atheletics, academic, work). a sleep-deprived person will do worse at work, have harder time keeping friendships (since they are sleepy) and thinking. i am a perfect example of this, as i was used to lots of sleep but then got like 4 hrs sleep per day and my depression (which was virtually nonexistant), has gotten a lot bigger.

i agree, my life sucks, to your reply, and that my life kinda sucks, haha! but seriously i agree for these reasons
-when i didn't get enough sleep, my depression repressed, with stress from school, and then turned into psychotic episodes, eventually, and quite quickly, over a few months
-and two, i know when i am depressed, i ten dto sleep more, or have wierd sleep patterns where i sleep 14+ hrs usually, and this is bad, but it helps for me to escape reality, bed becomes a comfort, so i take it:)
