Is this normal?

Postby salted lipstick » Fri Jan 21, 2011 5:19 pm

Hi. I have been diagnosed with Depression and Dissociative Identity Disorder. I cannot recall much of the trauma that has occurred in my past which is what brings me to my question...

Is it normal to feel cold when you cry? Like really, really cold with goosebumps all over?
I want to know if it is normal to feel cold when crying or if this is some sort of connection with trauma that my brain might have made, perhaps crying at the time something traumatic involving cold took place and all the time my brain now connects the body memory of coldness with crying?

Any thoughts?
In a way, I am not defined by my dissociation. In a way, I am.

Hmmm... yeah that's what I've been thinking. Thanks for your response.

I wouldn't mind hearing from a few other people too, just to check that that is the general consensus...

I can safely say it isnt regular for most people to feel literally cold when crying.
Infact the act of crying might even raise body temperature.
You could be right on what your thinking if you feel colder when crying compared to just before you start crying.
I presume your seeing someone about the D.I.D, have they mentioned much on this subject?
Depressed,confused,anxious? Maybe a solution is here --> http://www.psychforums.com/depression/topic53818.html

Thanks for your response. I do have a good therapist. I haven't mentioned the cold to him yet, I wanted to be sure it wasn't normal before mentioning it to him. If feeling cold when crying was normal, it might have sounded as stupid as asking "is it normal for tears to be wet?" He hasn't seen me crying yet so he wouldn't have noticed. Any emotions like sadness are so deeply dissociated that they rarely get seen by other people.
