Why does being in bed feel so good when I am depressed?

A psychologist I mentioned this to said "what are you trying to avoid"?

But I get great comfort burying myself under the covers. I feel safe and as though I am going to be left alone!

Sleeping when depressed

Postby Guest » Mon Apr 18, 2005 5:58 am

I find that being unconscious while asleep is escape from feeling sad, depressed or anxious while awake. Unfortunately, when I neglect obligations or fail to do anything productive due to excess sleep, then I feel even more anxious when I no longer can remain asleep. It is a slippery slope.

Sleeping is comforting to me when I am depressed. I can just snuggle down in my bed and block out whatever is bothering me. In the long run all it does for me is putting off what I must deal with sooner or later.

I know what you mean. My bed is like my little space where I can be alone. Phsyically, its comfortable as hell so maybe thats why it makes me feel better inside too. Also, when your in bed, you usually aren't doing much, and that could be because of a lack of energy, compliments of Depression. Beds, in my eyes, are just little safe havens. But, I've been told its worse for my condition to stay in mine all day.

Yes, sleep is often a coping mechanism or defense mechanism (not sure which) for me. It is simultaneously both good and bad. :(

Yeah, I think it exacerbates my depression too. I have recently really been trying to limit my hours sleeping, force myself out of bed earlier and earlier, and go to sleep earlier and earlier. Some days are successful, others aren't. :)

Yeah, when I was depressed, the best part of every was going to bed. And the worst was waking up. I think it feels that way because and it's escape from everything.

After crying and falling back asleep many times, I would tell myself I needed to get up... I was actually taking a class so I really had to get up. Small victories like that kept me going. I'm lucky because I never got to the point where I couldn't find the will to get up.

All the best,
