Though there can be many social factors to depression, what is the organic/chemical properties that cause depression? Is it just a lack of serotonin? Or are there cases of depression that have no chemical imbalances, if so what are the outside causes?
I am a young aspiring Psych student, I want to soak up as much 411 as possible.
Thank you!

If you really look into the research, you will see that there is no much real evidence for chemical imbalances, especially the ones many people believe in. Many studies show almost no difference between antidepressants and placebos.
Many people get over depressent without taking pills to adjust their neurochemicals. Exercise and cognitive therapy are two treatments that do not use pills.
Zen says that we cause our own unhappiness with all the things we want. If we did not want so many things and so much from other people, we would not be so disappointed.

You have studied Zen, jims? I can recommend an excellent book to you if you want.
