A doctor may begin with a complete physical exam, including blood tests so that any chemical/hormonal imbalances, deficiencies can be part of a successful treatment plan. These chemical imbalances, deficiencies or other health conditions can exacerbate depression.
A treatment plan tailored to you can then be put together for your approval. It may include both therapy and meds. An evaluation will determine the best path for treatment.
Depression and anxiety can affect weight, diet and sleep.
'Aches and pains' may be more pronounced when depressed.
If you are prescribed meds, the side effects can vary form none to severe, depending upon the medication and upon your body. Any side effects that you notice should be discussed with your doctor. A common side effect and one that I had was 'dry mouth'. It was mild and all I had to do was drink more water.
Alcohol consumption or illicit drug use may hinder the effectiveness of therapy and medications.
There are alternative treatments like ECT and your doctor will discuss the options with you should the need arise.
Best of luck to you. :D

Should my depression be treated with medicines, psychotherapy, or both?

A counsellor or psychiatrist can advise better. a psychiatrist told me i need a lot of psychotherapy but i didnt go.

How might depression affect my appetite and weight?
for me depression makes me want to eat less or no food at all. the weight reduces and i have become very weak. now i mostly eat fruits or stuff that's easy to digest.

How could depression affect my sleep?
depression makes me want to sleep all the time. or not sleep at all and listen to sad songs. there were nights when i was very sleepy but i wanted to listen to sad songs.

Could my depression be causing me physical pain?
stomach pain and at times the head hurts. when i'm very depressed i dont step out of the house as i struggle to even cross the street.

Could other health conditions be contributing to my symptoms of depression?
my depression was due to the people around me and some incidents.

Do I need medicine to treat my depression?
I've taken medicines but only for four days. i dont think anti depressants work that quickly. from what i've heard, it takes weeks for anti depressants to come into effect

What are the side effects of this drug?
anti depressants made me feel sleepy.

Do the symptoms of depression need special treatment?
What kind of lifestyle changes will help with my symptoms of depression?
no sex. that's what the psychiatrist told me. i also refrained from spicy food and fiction content on tv. watching tv freaked me out. i'd only see animal planet.

What about alternative treatments?
exercise, talking to a friend. but a counsellor can advise better. i havent gotten out of my depression

What should I do in an emergency?

call a friend. i've texted friends in emergency and that's helpful. i've told few of my friends of my depression and they are understanding. some are not, so i avoid them.

depression is a very serious ailment that eats up the mind. a counsellor or therapist would be helpful. if possible involve a real life friend in this situation and talk to the friend about this.

else this forum is very helpful. helped me a lot
