Supplements for mood disorders

Postby WorriedG287 » Thu Jun 01, 2017 4:59 pm

Does anyone have experience using supplements to boost serotonin in cases of depression and anxiety disorders (OCD)?

I used to be on sertaline/zoloft but took myself off of it 2 years ago, as I felt my thinking was a bit slowed and genuinely didn't need medication at the time. However, lately I feel that something is amiss and I could use a boost to feel good again. I'd like to see how I feel using supplements.

I used to take 5-htp but didn't really notice much of a difference. I've read about l-theanine for anxiety and it sounds promising. Though I'm not sure if it would make a difference in my mood.

Any others worth considering?

St Johns Wort is a common but fairly weak SSRI, it has been reported to reduce milder forms of depression or anxiety, but it's potency must be remembered. Although not what you described, Kava is a good alternative and greatly reduces anxiety-something very few herbals can do. It(I believe, don't quote me) is a GABA and Dopamine agonist. It has very relaxing effects but doesn't laze you or induce drowsiness. It uplifts my mood from irritable or aggressive to more carefree and social. I recommend *mod edit* for ease of use.

Reason: please do not recommend any type of vitamins; no one here is a professional

Like with all medications, any supplements can and do cause different reactions to each person. So it's good to share how it affected you and how it can affect others, but recommending it is not what Psych Forums is here for.
