My psychologist wants me to see a "companion"

Postby alesana » Sat Apr 23, 2016 4:25 am

I'm a suicide survivor and after 5 months in the hospital I'm out, in a wheelchair, and seeing a psychologist.

My new psychologist is suggesting that I see a companion, a lady she knows. She would come and socialize with me and do activities. It really sounds like I'm paying someone to hang out with me. Is this a common practice? Should I be skeptical?

I think she might think that I don't hang out with friends because I don't have any. That's not the case at all. I'm not going to say I have a million friends, but I'm not going to say I don't have anyone to hang out with either. I simply don't like being seen in my physical condition, and I don't have any will to socialize. My friends try and talk to me but I can't seem to actually make plans with them, I've only hung out with one friend who's showed up on surprise a couple times. Anyways is this "companion" thing an actual thing or maybe she's just trying to get her friend a job? I reluctantly agreed that I would try it but I searched it up and I couldn't find anything other than a companion dog so I'm pretty skeptical.

Hello,

I don't know where you live but here in the Netherlands as well as in the UK (and probably many places I don't know about) we have "social workers" which are basically what you describe as "companion". My friend with autism has one, and another friend with bipolar as well. I don't have one, so I can't tell you exactly how it works, but it's not completely unusual.
Currently working on my upcoming signature.
