Please help me with a letter from my psychiatrist

Postby Bodybuilder » Thu Oct 29, 2015 3:42 pm

Ok guys so I went to see a psychiatrist about my anger and depression. They didn't say much really at the appointment just that they want me to do anger management. But I'm confused about this letter I received from them today.
Here is a fee parts of the letter that made me wonder

Mr XXXX has agreed to do some anger management.
Mr XXXX has a number of personality characteristics has low tolerance to frustration and discharges verbal abuse and agression lol.as there is some consern about diagnosis I would like to see Mr xxx once more to encourage him to try anger management. Also he was euthymic

Please tell me what all this means as I have no idea are they saying I have personality disorder? What does a number of personality characteristics mean.
I only went to the dr for serious long term depression and a bit of anger help as I get pissed off pretty easily these days mainly because I have nothing to do with my time and feel like nothing to live for.so please if u understand what this letter is saying let me know cheers

Well, euthymic just means normal mood. Apparently they felt that when you were there you were not either depressed or euphoric.

I'm not sure what personality characteristics they are referring to, but I don't see any diagnosis there. Have you been diagnosed with something in the past? If so, they were probably just referring to you having characteristics of that.

I'm not a professional obviously so take this with a large pinch of salt but to me this letter translates as:

Mr XXXX gets frustrated and angry easily [those are "personality characteristics"]. He doesn't look depressed to me ["he was euthymic"]. Not sure what to diagnose him with ["there is some concern"] so I'd like to talk to him a bit longer to make up my mind. In any case anger management might be a good thing.

I'm assuming you haven't shared the entire letter ;) but this definitely doesn't say in this quote that you have borderline or anything like that.

This is the entire letter she wrote. Mr xx was casually dressed and we'll presented.he had good eye contact.speech was normal in rate and form.mood subjectively he was angry saying he has nothing to live for.objectively he was euthymic. There were no plans to harm himself. There are no abnormal perceptions or beliefs.

Mr xx has agreed to have anger management and to see me one more time.
Mr xx HAS A NUMBER OF PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTS.
Mr xx is unable to make enduring realitionships and has a low tolerance to frustration and discharges what apears to be verbal aggression. He is quick to blame his parents for his diffucultys this part is not true I don't blame them lol.
As there has been some consern about the diagnosis I will offer to see Mr xx once more to dicuss this further and encourage him to do anger management

This is the entire letter I got today from her

If you are British this might ring a bell -- your doctor sounds like Jeeves.

The problem with depression is that it is not something you can objectively assess from the outside. When I was leaving my job in 2011 with burnout and heavy depression people didn't believe that was the reason because they always saw me smiling. The facade we learn to put up can harm us. I felt like death reheated and all people saw was the big smile.

Now the letter -- I think that a part of what she says is that you said you were depressed ("subjectively" bit) but to her you didn't appear depressed ("objectively"). Also the anger issues might just be anger issues, or together with your depression they might point at something else (I don't know what) so she will see you again to assess that further. I wouldn't worry too much about the personality characteristics part. In context of the full letter it sounds like introduction to the next sentence where she lists the "characteristics".

Again, though, I'm not a pro so I may be wrong. Any idea when the next appointment will be?

I'm English yeah.I misread the letter too be fair it quite clearly says what u translated it to,Mr xx has a number of personality characteristics unable to make relationships etc so she was just saying what I said to her.so it's fine I new i didn't have a persoality disorder. I went to see her to get help for my chronic depression.and the anger I'm angry because Im so depressed with nothing to live for or do in life.I wasn't smiling at the appointment it was for about 20 min or less I never smile really have nothing to smile about , so I have no idea why she would say I'm not depressed that's bs.I feel depressed for 20 years now.your correct if you look normal at the appointment they will just brush it off.and I'm not going into my next visit acting in a manor that they may seem as truly depressed how ever that may be.

But I don't get it, how am I supposed to behave in an appointment to appear depressed .just saying I feel suiciadal most days and hate life to them is nothing.
But thanks for all your help some dr that spoke to me for a few min can't say I'm not depressed when I clearly am for the last 20 years.my panic attacks have got alot better and my aniety and ocd is manageable. But they can't know how I'm feeling inside lol.
