depression w/ psychotic features?

Postby ladyfreya » Mon Sep 14, 2015 10:31 am

I had an "intake" appointment a little over a week ago with a psychologist. He was a really nice guy. He asked a while bunch of questions about various things. Towards the end of the appointment he specifically told me he did not think that I was crazy or psychotic or anything of the nature. And that my "hallucinations" (geometrically and/or organically shaped colored lights, black shadows resembling real life things that are poorly defined like people, birds, bugs, ect. Both types in my peripheral vision) didn't seem like schizophrenia or psychosis. And we discussed things like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, ect. We also discussed my "sqwak" and "vocal tic NOS" was mentioned and I explained I would like to try a "torretts" medication. He seemed A-OK with that and told me to discuss that with the psychiatrist.

I arrived at the clinic at 12:10 for my appointment at 12:20. The clinic was completely dead. I checked in upon arriving. I sat until 12:46 before I was called back. The Psychiatrist literally saw me for 4 minutes. He asked me 3 questions. Am I suicidal, do I have anger, and am I "seeing" things. He cut me off every time I tried to answer or explain things. Cut me off every time I tried to ask him anything. Informed me that my tremor and "sqwak" had nothing to do with him or the clinic. And told me I had "Depression with psychotic features" but that I wouldn't be getting any medication because they cause weight gain and I already way to much. And sent me on my way at 12:50. My appointment was scheduled from 12:20 to 1:00.....

Is this normal? Is this how psychatric appointments are? I must admit I am none to impressed at this moment and to be honest I'm also little offended.

This is very much unlike any psychiatric appointment I ever had, and boy I had a few. Hundreds. Is there a way for you to see someone else?

Normal? No. Downright bizarre, I'd say. And you should be offended. Not just about the comment about your weight, but also their refusal to let you speak and cutting you off when you did.

What on earth is that supposed to mean?

I agree with Oliveira. Do what you can to find another clinic/doctor. Hopefully you have some more options. Look for resources in your area if you have trouble finding someone else.

Did you make another appointment with this ridiculous clinic? If you did, and you're covered by insurance or can pay for it easily, I would go back just to voice your concerns about the first appointment. Unless you can find somewhere else to go. In that case, don't waste your time with these people.

I've lost count of how many psychiatric appointments I've had, but none of them were like your experience. Your appointment with him sounds extremely strange. He doesn't exactly sound like a very helpful person and he sounds rude. Like the others are saying, you should try to find someone that will be able to help you.
